Forbes Contributor | Ecosystem Builder | Writer & Analyst | Responsible Neurotech Commercialization 🧠⚙️
It was so fun to participate in this terrific event and connect with so many students and aspiring neuroscientists, researchers, operators, and writers. The future of #neurotech and the world is in good hands! I was so geeked to meet these teenagers and 20-somethings interested in science, technology, engineering, computer science, policy, law, creative writing and more. I shared a few reflections from my zigzagging career path as a writer, analyst, and entrepreneur at Patchwise Labs that I wanted to jot down quickly. 💼 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 Identify the thing you like to do at work that makes you lose track of time, that you are excited about getting better and better at over the years. That's your Craft. Then, figure out how to add value by doing it for others. This will help you find your Trade. 💪🏽 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐯𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 If you're a self-aware type, you might find yourself wondering whether it's better to focus on doing what you're good at, or shore up your gaps. The answer is, "Yes." It's not a seesaw, it's a wobbleboard. 🪂 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐎𝐰𝐧 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 This one is not for everybody. You don't have to settle for what's available. There are few fixed rules in life. If you want to work on something, work on it. Money can become a cage, but your career mindset is the key to unlock agency. 😎 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐍 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞 Showing up matters a lot. What you are or aren't "qualified" to do based on education or experience on paper doesn't have to be a dead end. A growth mindset, self-awareness, perseverance don't come with a degree attached but they are critical traits that can be learned. Adapt, try, fail, and build yourself into who you want to become. Shout out to Dana Foundation for establishing and investing in the Dana Foundation Career Network in Neuroscience and Society and to the sterling emcee and host, Francis X. Shen, as well as Chinmayi Balusu, MPH for the invitation. And most importantly, thanks to Jennifer Lopez Adaku Ihekwoaba Pedro Herrera Niharika Ghosh Sonipriya Paul Anabel Braziel and the other students and recent grads who took the time to ask questions and connect on LinkedIn. If you're seeking smart, motivated interns or entry-level hires, look no further and please ask me for recommendations☝👀👆

In a few weeks, I'll be the keynote speaker at my high school's inaugural career fair event. In the 20 minutes between the end of the career fair and the start of a 3.5-day weekend, I'll be tasked with engaging 500 high schoolers on topics such as career readiness, taking responsibility for their education, getting involved, and life after high school. While I have a few themes in mind, I'm curious: if you could go back and offer advice to your 14-18-year-old self, what would it be?
