We awarded a total of $100,000 to beginning farmers through the Farmers on the Rise Award Program on December 7, 2023. Richard & Jennifer Hartleib of Berks County, PA are one of ten recipients. 🌟 Richard and Jennifer founded Castenea Farms, LLC in 2018. They designed the operation within an agroforestry concept, integrating multiple crops on the same acreage. Their primary crop, chestnuts, is grown throughout their property. Richard & Jennifer Hartleib They rotationally graze hair sheep and cow-calf belted Galloway pairs in pastures shared with the trees. The trees are grown to produce nuts in the future, get fertilized by the livestock, and the livestock benefit from the dappled shade provided by the trees. The Hartleibs grow fresh figs and early spring greens in a high tunnel and offer pick-your-own strawberries. They utilize a riparian area to grow woody florals. With a lot of roughage (fiber) from hay, and conservative amounts of measured grains, and a short finishing period, this ration is healthy for the animals, appropriate for the region, and resourceful. I understand the "no grain ever" position. I advocated for it for years. But after even more years spent on ranches and farms talking to producers and studying our supply chains, I no longer believe the "no grain ever" / "grass-finished is always superior" position is helpful. That position does not help people choose quality local beef - it's more likely to push them toward buying beef from across the country or across the world. It also isn't helping people focus on what's really important, like the nutritional value of real meat in general, and the environmental value of well-managed grazing. Sharing context, outlining the real considerations and tradeoffs of production, and creating dialogue does work. To achieve #SDG2(Zero Hunger), we work together with our students to train them them on how to grow food crops and the need to grow them in order to be able to feed themselves someday.
