Addressing unhealthy food environments and preventing overweight and obesity in the SADC Region: capacity building workshop underway! With over 20 million children in SADC affected by overweight, urgent action is needed to transform unhealthy food environments. This week, the SADC Secretariat, in collaboration with UNICEF and the World Health Organization, launched a capacity-building workshop for high-level decision-makers from 8 countries. The focus is on implementing WHO’s evidence-based policies, including front-of-package labeling, marketing restrictions, fiscal policies, improved school food standards, and food reformulation. Together, we’re building a healthier future by addressing the root causes of obesogenic environments and promoting sustainable, nutritious diets across the region. According to the NYC Mayor’s Office of Food Policy annual 2022 Food Metrics Annual Report, an estimated 1.2 million (14.6%) New York City residents were food insecure. (source:https://lnkd.in/dGdvksuu) What does that mean for cities like NYC and their residents when we know that food insecurity and socioeconomic status play a major role in liver disease prevalence, severity, outcomes and hepatic risk factors (e.g. unhealthy diets 🍟)? Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (#MASLD) is now the most common liver disease globally 🌍. #FoodInsecurity is an "upstream" risk factor for MASLD, advanced fibrosis and greater all-cause mortality among those living with liver disease. If we do not intervene on food insecurity at four major levels (environment, policy, community and health care), we cannot ↘️ reduce the burden of liver disease, and consequently, close the gap on social and health inequities. 👇 Read the latest on the current research in the field, the need for implementing proven interventions, and the role #liverspecialists especially can have: https://lnkd.in/e2Sx5K5z

According to the most recent report from the USDA, nearly 13% of American households experienced food insecurity in 2022. This means that many individuals and families are not receiving the proper nutrition they need. To combat this ongoing issue, Aetna, a CVS Health Company is partnering with local organizations to increase access to nutritious food in the communities we serve. Aetna Better Health of Texas teamed up with the Episcopal Health Foundation to address complex social issues that often lead to food insecurity. By using a solution discovery approach, we're helping Texas communities identify, understand and share existing strategies to combat food insecurity. Heading to Athens for a workshop with representatives of 11 Member States from 5 World Health Organization regions to advance policies to regulate the harmful #marketing of foods to children. 👉 More and more children and adolescents across the world are living with obesity, high glucose or high blood pressure. 👉 In most of the cases, these conditions appear due to the excessive consumption of foods high in #sugar, #salt or unhealthier #fats. Sadly, often this consumption starts in the first years of life and worsens over time. 👉 Food Marketing increases children's interest in and craving for these foods. 👉 Unless it's regulated, food marketing will drive many harmful eating behaviours that lead to #obesity and #noncommunicable diseases. #thoughtsonathursday Reflecting on a recent read about the Nutri-Score system, it's enlightening to see how a simple color-coded label could significantly steer us toward healthier food choices. Especially noteworthy is how this initiative, gaining momentum across Europe, is making strides in France,Belgium, spain and germaney. It’s more than just a label; it's a public health tool, illuminating the path to better nutrition and, consequently, a healthier life. The International Agency for Research on Cancer's endorsement of Nutri-Score as a potent weapon against non-communicable diseases underlines its importance. It’s a stark reminder of how vital clear nutritional information is, particularly for combating health inequalities in less affluent regions. This Thursday, I find myself inspired by the power of informed choices and the global impact they can have. Let's embrace transparency in our food and make health-conscious decisions easier for everyone. For 100 years, food fortification, the practice of deliberately increasing the content of vitamins and minerals in a food, has been essential to combating public health crises. However, these practices have continued into the modern era. Because overconsumption of nutrients has been linked to toxicity and diseases, public health officials should continue to reflect on the benefits and risks of food fortification today. Check out my latest blog post on the Bill of Health to read more about food fortification policy.
