The Super Bowl was last night, and as always, the internet is buzzing. The halftime performance! The nail biting last touchdown! Beyonce announcing new music! And, of course, the commercials. Which were good? Bad? Boring? You have serious money if your brand can place a Super Bowl commercial. So it's no surprise that giant brands and a few well-funded causes occupy all the screen space. But what if the little guys had an opportunity to get their message out to over 100 million people in one night? Let's dream a little. If we were in an alternative reality, what/who would you like to see advertised during the Super Bowl? It will surprise no one that I would like to see a commercial about paper. It could center around literacy or encourage people to step away from screens at least once a day to write something by hand, or even the science that shows that people learn more when reading a physical book or document than when they read on a screen. The commercial could highlight all of the incredible things that paper has made possible or even show spectacular paper art. Of course, I would make the commercial fun, engaging, and memorable. (I've only had a few minutes with my dream, while last night's ads took much longer to visualize and create.) What would your Super Bowl 'little guy' commercial dream be? Watching Ryan Gosling belt out 'I’m just Ken' in clips of the Oscars this week, I’m reminded of the branding and design lessons he’s reinforced for me over the years. (Yes, really). 1. Known for his versatility in acting Gosling's decision to take on the role of Ken in Barbie was a game-changer. I’d seen snippets of his comedic ability in ‘Crazy Stupid Love’ and ‘The Big Short’, but with one mega movie move; Barbie - brand Ryan was redefined. His impeccable ownership of the character, delivery of lines and timing has repositioned him as a bona fide comedic actor. LESSON: Leveraging strengths in a new way can expand brand perception and value. Consider a brand’s game-play to solidify expertise and credibility within a space. 2. Many moons ago I worked at a workplace that faced a few cleanliness issues that seemed unsolvable. Most of the creatives had had a go of creating a poster to address the issue - imagine lots of clever copy, well-gridded, trendy type signs… none of which shifted the dial. And then our receptionist put up a poster with an image of the Gos with the words ‘Hey girl, I’m watching you’ (this was before the meme had become a thing), and just like that behaviours changed and we never had an issue again. LESSON: Understand your audience, their motivations and interests. Find the personality traits and tone that you share with them. Lean into this mindset and mood to create stronger engagement and impact. 3. And who can forget Gosling’s character Noah in ‘The Notebook’ and his unwavering commitment to love. LESSON: Stay steadfast to your brand vision and values, even when faced with challenges or setbacks. Consistent commitment to your brand’s mission and beliefs will resonate with your audience and build trust and loyalty over time.

"I don't get this ad, therefore it has to be bad" Common reasoning, but it misses the point. Most people probably didn't figure out who the murderer was after the first few chapters of that crime novel. Most people probably wouldn't get all of the jokes and references in whatever brilliant comedy. But that wasn't the goal. The goal was to make something interesting, to build suspence, to make people laugh. Most of them got it eventually. Repetition legitimizes, that's why a hit song has a chorus. A campaign, a concept, takes time to learn. That is its strength. Because WHEN you get it, you're in. You are one of them, one of us. You got it and this is your reward. Powerful stuff, that.
