While China alone had share of ~45% of the global market. Europe saw significant growth, with installations reaching 40 GWp. Last year, the solar market benefited from a backlog of orders from 2022, when demand surged due to the energy crisis. Solar manufacturer Maxeon Solar Technologies’ shipments in the third quarter could drop by about 23% quarter-on-quarter to only 622MW due to reduced shipments to a US customer and a drop in demand in the global distributed generation (DG) market.

First Solar to open 5th US manufacturing facility in Louisiana https://lnkd.in/gK-UaXhi Thin-film solar PV manufacturer First Solar has confirmed the Louisiana location of its fifth US manufacturing facility, a 3.5GW, US$1.1 billion dollar Cadmium Telluride (CadTel) module production factory. Acadiana Regional Airport in Iberia Parish, Louisiana will play host to the new facility, which is expected to be online and producing First Solar’s Series 7 modules in the first half of 2026. By then, First Solar said that it expects Series 7 products to make up over two thirds of its domestic nameplate capacity, which it anticipates to be around 14GW. The plans for the facility and the accompanying US$1.1 billion investment were first announced in July and follows its plans for facilities in Alabama and Ohio. Elin Türkiye, a renowned #solarmodule manufacturer with roots tracing back to 1981, has initiated solar module production in #Texas, heralding its debut in the #US market. Operating under the name Sirius PV USA, the company unveiled a 225,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Waller County, near #Houston, Texas. With a strategic vision to expand its footprint in the U.S., #Elin aims to seize the burgeoning demand for #solarenergy solutions in the region. Initially starting with an annual production capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW), the company envisions scaling up to 2 GW within 18 months. Presently, Sirius PV USA boasts a workforce of over 100 associates locally in Texas, with plans to bolster it to 500 associates as production capacity increases. While Elin has a track record of producing #TOPCon modules in #Turkey, Sirius PV USA will kickstart its U.S. operations with #PERC technology, transitioning to TOPCon technology from July onwards. Although from the perspective of the capital market, the fundamentals of the photovoltaic industry seem relatively average this year, the industry itself remains vibrant in terms of development. The photovoltaic industry showed a significant growth rate in 2023, with production on the manufacturing end increasing by over 70% year-on-year. In the first ten months, the domestic photovoltaic newly installed capacity reached 142.6 gigawatts, marking a 145% increase compared to the previous year. The total output value of the photovoltaic manufacturing sector reached 1.3 trillion RMB, all three of these figures hitting historical highs. Especially in terms of newly installed power generation capacity, over half was achieved through photovoltaic power generation. The centralized installation capacity reached 61.8 gigawatts, accounting for approximately 48%, while in distributed installations, residential and commercial installations reached about 33 gigawatts and 34 gigawatts respectively, each accounting for a quarter of the total newly installed capacity. This indicates that demand is experiencing explosive growth in both distributed and centralized systems. Canadian Solar Unveils Plans for 5 GW Solar Wafer Facility in Thailand Canadian Solar has announced a 5 GW solar PV wafer production facility in Chonburi, Thailand. The N-type wafer manufacturing plant is set to commence operations in March 2024, contributing to the existing Thailand TOPCon cell manufacturing plant initially. By 2025, these wafers will serve as inputs to the fully operational 5 GW U.S. cell factory in Jeffersonville, Indiana, as previously announced. EU needs to invest up to 60b EUR in domestic PV production The #EU 's strategic plan is to reach 600 GW of newly installed solar energy by 2030, but the supply chain moved outside Europe almost 15 years ago. EU producers of #PV equipment have only 2.8% (9.2 GW) of global market share of modules, 0.6% (less than 1 GW) of cells, and picture is brighter only in the case of inverters, where share is about 24%. The production of #polysilicon in the EU currently has a global share of 8%. That is primarily thanks to the capacity of Germany's Wacker of about 21 GW. Due to the low cost of labour and electricity, producers from Asia dominate the market. But it seems this could change because the EU has decided to act and support domestic producers. According to a new report from SolarPower Europe, several European manufacturers of various equipment segments have announced significant investments soon. The plan is to increase the production of modules in Europe to 50 GW per year and the production of cells to 32 GW (32 times more) by 2030. But, SolarPower Europe estimates a EUR 30-60 billion financing gap including CAPEX and OPEX to reach the 30 GW target of EU manufacturing capacities across the value chain. Thus, addressing the issue of financing is critical to deploy manufacturing capacities. Manufacturing costs are a key challenge in Europe, so SolarPower Europe is proposing creation of Solar Manufacturing Bank, whose primary goal would be to help manufacturers and to ease the burden of operating costs (OPEX) that have been making European products too expensive for years compared to Asian competition.
