I spent one week at Mazda Twickenham for work experience, which has been an invaluable opportunity for me. This experience has significantly enhanced my understanding of the sales sector and the automotive industry as a whole. During the week, I had the privilege of working with the sales, accounts, and administrative teams, gaining insights into the operations and functions of each department. My first two days were spent shadowing the sales team, and I've learnt a lot from it. One surprise for me was that while product knowledge is important, it’s not as important as I initially thought. Instead, negotiation, communication and customer handling skills were much more important to close down sales. Whilst observing salespeople dealing with potential customers, I learnt the importance of active listening and asking open questions to the customer, to gain more knowledge about their current position, needs etc. Another critical quality a salesperson must possess is organisation. Salespeople often deal with multiple customers and need to maintain up-to-date information about brand new car models and client details. This approach helps tailor the sales pitch to address specific customer concerns and preferences. My time with the sales team provided me with valuable insights and skills that I can apply in my future roles. Following this, I spent time with the administrative and accounts team. While I found the administrative team’s work to be less exciting than that of the sales team, I have realised that their work is essential to the company’s success. One of the main tasks I had to complete was the reconciliation of accounts. This involves matching transactions in the company’s records with those in the bank statements. On top of this, I gained an insight into how to process paperwork related to car sales and customer documentation. For instance, poor paperwork management led to a brand new Mazda being delivered to the wrong address. Subsequently, I was given the responsibility of communicating with customers over the phone. This experience was challenging but also improved my communication and customer handling skills. I handled various inquiries such as booking MOT appointments and addressing general customer concerns. This experience allowed me to apply and work on my communication skills. Handling these calls required concise communication and problem solving skills. This experience not only enhanced my professional skills but also prepared me for real-world interactions.
