If you are wondering how partnerships between public and private stakeholders can improve the implementation of the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), I recommend checking out an innovative workshop. This workshop provided an opportunity to assess the current gaps in NAP implementation and identify appropriate gaps that can be minimized with public-private partnerships. During the workshop, participants learned about various operational aspects of PPPs and developed short projects to address gaps in the strategic objectives defined in the National Action Plan. Breaking investigation from Open Cages. Half of the chicken products sold in Lidl GB contain antibiotic resistant superbugs, according to an independent laboratory test. Why did we commission a lab to look at bacteria in chicken meat? Antibiotic resistance (AMR) is recognised by the World Health Organization as one of the world's top 10 public health threats. It kills thousands in the UK every year alone by causing infections which don't respond to most types of antibiotics. What does it have to do with animal welfare? The types of fast-growing chickens sold by Lidl GB live such poor lives, and are so susceptible to disease and infection, that the data suggests that they require 9 times more antibiotics than slower growing chickens. The industry compensates for poor animal welfare by overusing medicines, reducing their effectiveness on humans. In fact, intensive chicken farming is recognised as a major catalyst for AMR, as summarised by Professor Timothy Walsh from the University of Oxford: “Poor animal welfare is one of the major catalysts for the use of antibiotics and subsequent drivers of antibiotic resistance. Improving animal welfare, such as adopting slower-growing breeds in line with the Better Chicken Commitment, can significantly reduce the need for antibiotics to be given to the birds in the first place." For years we have asked retailers like Lidl GB to stop selling fast-growing chickens. These alarming new findings reveal that this is no longer only about animal welfare: we are all paying the price. According to the tests, a Lidl customer has a one in two chance of taking potentially life threatening superbugs into their homes. That's like flipping a coin. Are we really OK with that? Is cheap meat really worth the risk to our health? "Lidl will never do that." On the contrary. Lidl is already doing it in France and many other European countries. Why not the UK?
