Glad to hear how much Market Access for SMMEs is being focused on at national level. At OpenFarms and through our Onlyfarms.app platform, we recognised this problem years ago and as a result, built a system which connects all agricultural roleplayers, whatever their size, to existing contracts and all required and/or ancillary services in between. Unfortunately, what we sit with is an economies of scale issue when it comes to SMMEs and their associated output pricing. We believe the solution lies in syndicated cultivation of multiple SMMEs in proximity, towards large-scale off-take, using standardised operating and transactional procedures. Of course, this is easier to do with existing, funded operators rather than subsistence farmers and thus requires a measure of government intervention from both funding and incentivisation perspectives.
