Fascinating “real talk” conversation about ag #biologicals during an open roundtable discussion at today’s North Carolina #AgTech Investor Forum on crop #biocontrol and #bioyield. I have goosebumps and a bit of PTSD from the days when I worked at Monsanto on the team not only trying to bring some of these products to market, but trying to create public acceptance of them at the same time. I am so thankful for the #technology and #regulatory team members who helped this “affairs” girl understand what I was talking about back then. You know who you are! So many of the same issues exist all these years later - yet we desperately need these products to 1) come to market, 2) have the trust of #farmers (and investors) and 3) give farmers another tool to use for the mounting pressures they face in a changing #climate. A huge eye opener for me this morning was several people in this room in agreement that it’s easier/faster and currently better to launch a biologicals company in Brazil right now due to regulatory realities. We have work to do. I was and am a cheerleader of these technologies and appreciate the candor but also optimism in this room of the bright minds and big players who will make it possible. Thanks for the invitation North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBiotech)! Great to be back in beautiful RTP. #agbiologicals #innovation #trust #technology #agtech #fieldtrials #startups #agriculture #research

#Corteva competitor Inari must face seed #patent lawsuit A decision made public on Monday by a federal court in Delaware allows #agriculture #technology behemoth #CortevaAgriscience to proceed with its case against startup #InariAgriculture, alleging that the latter is illegally replicating its patented seeds. Because Inari failed to demonstrate early on in the case that its Belgian subsidiary could create its own genetically modified plants using Corteva's seeds without breaking American #intellectualproperty rules, U.S. District Judge John #Murphy declined to dismiss the case. An instant response was not received from Inari's spokespeople regarding the decision. A Corteva representative declined to provide a statement. In 2019, Delaware-based Corteva separated from #DowDuPont. It filed a #lawsuit against Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Inari last year, #claiming that the rival firm had #violated Corteva's patent and other intellectual property rights by obtaining the company's protected seed samples from a nonprofit and transferring them to its Belgian branch for commercial purposes. Regardless of Corteva's rights, Inari had contended in its motion for dismissal that the nonprofit that supplied the seed samples "authorizes unrestricted availability to the public of those seeds". Additionally, Inari stated that testing the seeds could not be considered an infringement because U.S. patent law did not apply to its usage of the seeds in Belgium. Murphy #claimed that Inari's arguments were predicated on theories that remained to be verified. "Many of Inari's arguments require the assumption that whatever Inari is accused of doing is nothing more than what any member of the public is entitled to do with a deposited seed," Murphy stated. "An interesting notion, but is it true?" #Patent #InariAgriculture #claimed #intellectualproperty #agriculture #technology #CortevaAgriscience

The Biotechnology Innovation Organization is still analyzing the impacts of a host of amendments to H.R. 8467. Overall, the draft speaks directly to BIO’s membership, supporting their innovative work in the lab, field, and marketplace, Torres said. It would: - Advance and enlarge the “virtuous circle” of biotechnology-driven innovation. - Treat biotechnology as a national security imperative. - Identify and break down barriers to accessing medicines, in animal health and pandemic preparedness provisions. - Support biotech’s unique role in food security and climate impact. https://lnkd.in/enBZUMck

🌱 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 – 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 🌱 Translating fundamental research into innovations that growers can use in the field is most effective when we have great partnerships between industry and academia. As we continue to develop our highly valuable (and fun) relationship with the excellent CEPLAS - Cluster of Excellence on Plant Sciences at #LifeHubMonheim, we were really excited to take part in their Exchange Platform 2024 with a strong focus on #biologics in Crop Protection. Thank you for the invitation to take part alongside such a fantastic group that are at the core of NRW’s innovation ecosystem for agriculture: KWS Group NPZ Innovation GmbH CinSOIL Gateway Excellence Start-up Center University of Cologne BIO.NRW BioRiver Biotope Anne Helfer Frauke Hangen Dr. Nils Schrader Ingo Stefes Marc Kley Jens Uhlemann talked about Open Innovation at Bayer and how this can be leveraged by academia. Bjoern Hahn gave insights into how academia can best prepare for partnerships with companies in field of biologics. 🗝𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 🌉 The Bayer Crop Science | Innovation Ecosystem has great opportunities help early-stage research bridge the dreaded innovation “valley of death”. 🏃♀️ As with all types of crop protection not just biologics: know your competitors. Benchmark your product against the market standards. 📜 And one that comes up a lot, but always needs driving home. Make sure you know the difference between IP and FTO. Just because you have “Intellectual Property” (patents) on your invention, doesn’t mean you can sell it or use (no “Freedom To Operate”). #Ecosystem #CropProtection #TeamBayer

A familiar face on the cover of Seed World Europe’s November edition! Editor Marcel Bruins recently sat down with our very own Emily Rees, President & CEO of CropLife International, as she reflected on the first 18 months at the helm of the association, the challenges and achievements to date, and the direction of travel ahead. To get the full perspective, dive into this article in the latest issue of Seed World Europe here: https://lnkd.in/eHjXxeKD!
Of all the twists and turns a career in international public policy has brought my way, being a cover girl (and a blooming one at that) is one of the more unexpected! Many thanks to Seed World Europe's editor Marcel Bruins for this opportunity, which gave me not only the chance for some reflection on our purpose at CropLife International (always a good thing), and an excuse to celebrate our achievements (definitely a good thing) but also a platform of #gratitude for our members, network and the team around me for their amazing support along the way. To Melanie Bausen-Wiens of BASF Agricultural Solutions, Frank Terhorst of Bayer and Alexandra Brand of Syngenta, your voices and insights illustrate just why our members make us better than the sum of our parts. Collaborative #partnerships in action. Thank you! Link: https://lnkd.in/g9Pw7xwz
