It’s a remarkable coincidence, I have recently been writing for the potential and necessity of #regenerative #agriculture (#ReAg) in the #Gulf region to promote a #sustainable #agri_food_ecosystem. This week, I learned about the launch of the national program "Plant the Emirates" (#PlantTheEmirates), which aims to green the Emirates through planting trees and agriculture. To achieve carbon-rich soil, a greener landscape, and a cooler environment, it is essential to cultivate trees and crops. While controlled agriculture techniques like hydroponics and vertical farming can contribute to production, they often require significant energy and add plastic waste into the soil, exacerbating #climate_change and #pollution. Such technologies should be used judiciously, however, the policy should always be focusing primarily on sustainable solutions. The "Plant the Emirates" program seeks to embed an agricultural culture in schools and homes, instilling values of sustainability in future generations while expanding green spaces across the nation. This initiative is timely, addressing the urgent challenges of food security and climate change. Moreover, the program has the potential not only to enhance local food security but also to rejuvenate degraded soils. The Indian Agricultural Research System has already made significant strides in developing dryland agriculture through institutions like the Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (#CRIDA) and the Central Arid Zone Research Institute (#CAZRI), which have created proven technologies for such environments. Programs like the Integrated Desert Farming Innovation Program (#IDFIP), led by ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas within the CGIAR system, also offer valuable insights from their work in Gulf countries. Some of the initiatives under the programme can be as under – A. Benefiting from co-researching with existing institutions working in same areas. B. Experience sharing across boarders at regional level. C. Joint investments in bio-based scientific infrastructure (new crop introduction, variety development, customization of production practices, and others) D. Replicating models of agro-forestry, silviculture (Silvo-pasture) and others, which have been experimented in other parts of the world. E. Developing financial incentives for long-term farming projects. F. Innovative business models, blending farming skill of dryland agriculture, land and capital. Congratulations to the #UAE for embarking on this much-needed greening initiative! AAAID ADQ #UAE #Gulf Abu Dhabi Investment Office #DryLandFarming #DesertAgriculture https://lnkd.in/gueB_YfG
