Climate change, geopolitical conflict and supply chain disruptions present a huge challenge to the food industry globally - and therefore to us all. Climate change is projected to reduce agricultural yields by up to 25 percent by 2050. Supply chain disruptions led to an additional 140 million people to live below the poverty line. And 420,000 people die annually due to food borne illnesses. What can we do to support food safety across the globe? How can we ensure producers across the global south don’t lose access to critical export markets with an increasing complexity of regulations? How can we ensure food safety standards to the benefit of us all and support producers to meet those standards? This was discussed amongst other issues at this year’s #foodsafety congress. Thank you Handelsverband Deutschland e.V. (HDE) for the invitation! I laid out UNIDO’s approach to tackle food safety – this includes: 1. Support countries and local institutions in harmonizing food safety standards 2. Leverage technologies such as blockchain to provide end-to-end traceability so food products are tracked from farm to fork 3. Develop local compliance (e.g. testing) and regulatory capacities to upgrade food products and improve export competitiveness 4. Equipping producers, farmers and associations with skills, tools and capacity to adhere to sustainability regulations such as EUDR to ensure access to critical markets is not lost

I’m 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲! 💡 It was a special honor that Gunther Beger Managing Director of UNIDO opened the 16. Food Safety Kongress In his keynote speech, he underline the impact of multiple crises and the increasing complexity of legal regulations on food safety. He called for more parity in the economic relationships between all actors in the supply chain. Only together will we be able to overcome the challenges of supplying the world's population with safe food. 🔗 This morning I could give an update to the attendees on current developments and the interaction between food safety, security, and sustainability management. We have to find the right balance here. 🎯 The Food Safety Kongress is the gathering place for the German-speaking food safety community. This year's motto is "Safe. Sustainable. Future-oriented."
