After two weeks of working again I’ve been thinking about my onboarding experiences throughout my career.
My current experience has been relentless in terms of meetings and learning.
Relentless for the better though.
My first job ever was corporate security.
If you’re imagining someone who sits at a desk after hours or in a security office watching movies then your visions are spot on.
At one location the manager told me to take two binders of memos and read through them. Imagine being 18 and thinking, is this how workplaces operate because I don’t want it.
The training at my first real job was mainly watching over the shoulder of someone else. The excitement was palpable.
My other experiences are a mix of shadowing, watching over shoulders, reading docs, twiddling thumbs, and an assortment of other methods.
This training though didn’t waste time with learning. Day 2 I was sitting in demos and check ins.
Every 30-60 minutes is another meeting for 7 straight hours with lunch being the only break.
It’s relentless but it’s also a lot of repetition which helps with learning and reinforcement.
As you get older and accumulate more experience you compare and contrast with your past.
You also learn that an onboarding experience speaks volumes about how a company operates.
In this case they want you to be exposed quickly, learn quickly, and adapt quickly. Then you can actually start quickly.
No time wasted.
