Seven years ago, fire alarm equipment maker Space Age Electronics, Inc. had virtually no automated equipment in the sheet metal department—just manual punches, brakes, and TIG welding cells. How times have changed, writes Senior Editor Tim Heston. “Our manufacturing environment involves a lot of high-volume, low-mix work, but we also have a lot of high-mix, low-volume work. It’s never consistent from day to day, so we need to be able to pivot at a moment’s notice,” says company Joseph Mongeau. The Sterling, Mass.-based manufacturer of fire-alarm and life safety products has seen revenue grow by more than 40% since 2017. Its systems can be found in various commercial structures, from office buildings to stadiums, including Fenway Park. “We recently finished the largest year ever in the company’s history,” said Ryan Mongeau, director of technology. “Even through COVID, we didn’t see a drop in business.” AMADA AMERICA, INC. #metalfabrication #manufacturing #welding #metalforming #automation #sheetmetal #fabrication #boston

Plastic Snap Joint Housing Designs for Low Pressure Disposables + proof of concept filters. Pain free nose clip for pulmonary testing.
When creating a new product, assembly or solution, do you jump in to a starting point immediately, or do you scan the horizon for the field of possibilities? It is easy to miss opportunity if we act too fast in assuming a solution before more serious thought. Just Hints: You have to assemble 2 parts, so ... is it/does it ... 1. consist of a permanent assembly or openable? 2. disassemble with effort ... or not at all? 3. have a removable"lock" element? 4. use welding (U/S, laser, arc, etc.)? 5. use adhesives, permanent or dissolvable? 6. spin, laser weld: plastics/metal? 7. snap-together & be permanent or disassemblable? 8. use heat/cold to shrink before assembly &/or use cold/heat to disassemble? 9. openable with pressure/suction? 10. openable by severing a "key" or inserting a tool? 11. openable by drilling/lasering a hole? 12. Rotating w/threads or cam/thread segments? 13. Rotating with deformation & "dogs" to give permanent lock? 14. Require flexibility to use, lock or unlock? 15. Thermal shrink fit assembly option, cryogenic shrink open? 16. One piece can be destructively cut easily to open? 17. Third part locking with a pin, fastener, either force fit or welded. 18. Locking dogs once screwed forced together 19. Pressure seal, leak tight & how much? 20. Identical materials or 2 different materials where 1 "gives"? 21. Repeatable re-opening or not? 22. How cost sensitive & critical in function is the assembly? Assembling 2 items may sound simple, but in product design, tough creative work rarely has only 1 solution and the whole life cycle of the product matters as to what assembly technique & materials are used? A side note: A new Range Rover owner heads out into the mountains on his new steed and bumps around a bit and poof ... he gets a flat. No problem, he's a mechanical type. Into the tools that came with the RR, but what the heck ... none of the tools fits the lug nuts. Is this progress, stupidity, lack of foresight by RR or the owner, dealer, or all 3? This is a microview of what should be routine, but doesn't get set up to be "foolproof" from the start by Range Rover, the dealer, the wheel/lugnut maker & the owner who each think the other has taken care of the issue. Plan your reuse, repair, shoehorn solutions. Bo Clawson
