A compelling alternative to traditional synthetic chemicals 🌾 Introducing Bio10, one of the innovators in our 2024 GRDC GroundUp program. Bio10 has developed a new rapid compost system that can reformulate solid and agricultural waste into fertiliser in less than five days. Specifically, the startup is harnessing advanced biological processes and enzyme technologies to accelerate waste decomposition and enhance nutrient retention, reducing waste to high value compost which, with certain inputs, can be processed to produce pelleted fertiliser. Founded in 2019 with a team of specialists in aquaculture, biotechnology and industrial engineering, Bio10 is also focusing on another major challenge in the agricultural sector – growing pesticide resistance. Combining natural ingredients with the latest nano technology, the company has created a range of compelling alternatives to synthetic pesticides that repel large and small pests with a single-treatment solution including mealy bugs, spider mites, russet mites, aphids and caterpillars. Bio10 will showcase their solutions at our 2024 GRDC GroundUp Showcase day this Thursday. #GroundUp #Agtech #Grains #Fertiliser #Accelerator

🔬 Biotechnology: Paving the Way for Sustainable Agriculture 🌾 With the global population projected to approach 10 billion by 2050, the challenge of increasing food production by 70% looms large. Traditional chemical pesticides have been the go-to solution, but their detrimental effects on our environment—from soil degradation to genetic disorders—are becoming impossible to ignore. This is where biotechnology steps in as a game changer. By harnessing the power of biopesticides, we're developing targeted, eco-friendly solutions that protect crops without compromising the health of our planet. Biopesticides, derived from natural materials like microbes and plants, decompose rapidly, leaving no harmful residues behind. They are a key tool in modern agriculture, offering a sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides. Through innovations like plant-incorporated protectants (PIPs) and microbial pesticides (e.g., Bacillus thuringiensis), biotechnology is enabling us to create crops that are inherently resistant to pests, reducing the need for synthetic chemicals. These advances not only boost agricultural yields but also help preserve our ecosystems. As we continue to explore and expand the potential of biotechnology in agriculture, we have the opportunity to create a more sustainable and resilient food system. Let’s lead the way in adopting biotechnological solutions for the future of farming. 🌿 Biotechnology isn’t just about feeding the world—it’s about doing it responsibly. 🌍 #Biotechnology #SustainableAgriculture #Biopesticides #EcoFriendly #AgTech #FoodSecurity #PlantScience #Sustainability #FutureOfFarming

📢 New paper alert on Microalgal Biostimulant for Sustainable Agriculture 🌍🌿 This work aimed to isolate protein-rich microalgal mutants with increased biostimulant activity. Random mutagenesis was performed with Chlorella vulgaris, and a selection of protein-rich mutants were sorted through fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), resulting in the isolation of 17 protein-rich mutant strains with protein contents 19–34% higher than that of the wildtype. Notably, mutant F4 demonstrated remarkable improvements: 38% higher biomass productivity, 22% higher growth rate, and 62% more chlorophyll. This novel strain was scaled up for testing and showed promising biostimulant potential. Applied to garden cress seeds, it led to a 7% higher germination index and 19% improved growth. Several companies are working on breeding plants that are better at converting sunlight into energy. But there are simpler, cheaper, and faster ways to boost photosynthesis across any crop, claims Malaysian startup QarboTech, which is pioneering a novel approach utilizing carbon quantum dots. The nanoscale dots, which QarboTech extracts from agricultural waste/biochar, penetrate leaves and interact with chloroplasts, the tiny food factories in plants that turn sunlight into energy, optimizing photon absorption and electron transfer. This improves the health and robustness of the plants, shortening crop cycles and enhancing quality and nutrient absorption, enabling farmers to increase yields and potentially reduce fertilizer use, says CEO Chor Chee Hoe. #agtech #carbondots #cropinputs Qarbotech Michal Klar AgFunder
