Over the weekend, I went to buy vegetables from the market, the usually full and bubbling areas were near empty. I approached the man I usually buy from to inquire why the emptiness by that time, he told me the cost of transportation was confusing them. They couldn't determine what price to sell due to the hike, thus alot of the sellers held back a bit from bringing those vegetables. That in turn created scarcity and increase in price. From what he told me, the vegetables leaves the farm at N5,000 and arrived the wholesalers hub at N45,000. Logistics cost drove the price. For the purpose of this post, we are looking at logistics cost. This is one area every importer and exporter should pay critical attention to. This will help eliminate error in total cost projections. Due to some global trade disruptions, logistics costs witnessed a sharp rise, though not as astronomical as my experience at the market. From week 18 of 2023 to week 8 of 2024, Peru's fresh blueberry exports totalled $1.661 billion (+16% compared to the $1.438 billion reached in the same period of the previous season), according to a Peruvian company's market analysis.

OIG News | China's Beef Market in Week 4 of 2024   In #December, #China #imported 241,200 tons of #beef, with 121,100 tons imported from #Brazil, followed by #Argentina at 42,700 tons, #Uruguay at 22,400 tons and #Australia at 15,300 tons.   In 2023, the #import #volume of beef in China continued to #grow, reaching 2.74 million tons, a 1.8% increase compared to 2022. But the average import #price experienced a year-on-year #decrease of 21%, reaching 5,195 US$/T.   This week, the #spot market prices of South American beef products saw a moderate #decline. As the stockpiling phase before the Spring Festival approaches its conclusion, #downstream markets have completed extensive purchases. Currently, the focus was to replenish on end-user demand. While #processing #plants mainly made small-scale purchases for cost-effective products.   The price of short ribs from New Zealand continued to be weak. The spot prices of bone-related products, such as femur bones and brisket bones, continued to #decline. Additionally, prices of beef chuck cuts were showing a downward trend. As the Chinese New Year approaches, sales of certain products, like outside flat, have slowed down. Notably, the spot price for honeycomb remained relatively stable, with a slight increase, which indicated that the market demand was #growing.   As for #grainfed products, certain markets experienced #shortages of specific cuts, such as bone-in rib eye, rib eye, chuck ribs and chuck roll, showing significant price #increases. At the same time, short rib products showed a lackluster trend, with prices continuing to #decline.
