Something is brewing... Last year, our Senior Client Director, David Beattie, joined forces with some of the beer industry’s greats to give a shot in the arm to our local pubs and bars after a difficult trading period in Jan. What started as an idea quickly became an entire supply chain, and with the help of some of our partners, Fusion Pale Ale was born. Not only was a great tasting, well-branded beer produced but we completely sold out in every one of our partner pubs and bars. But, this wasn't a vanity project, it was a project with purpose. Here's what just one of the pubs had to say: “This wonderful project had a positive impact for Ghost Whale. January is a tough month for the whole beer industry so being able to offer a great quality draft beer to customers for an attractive price whilst making higher than usual margins on the beer is a win-win that helped soften the blow of January's usual rate of sale.” Off the back of the projects success, Fusion is back for 2025. Dry January: Good for You, Not So Good for the Local Pub Ah, Dry January – the annual tradition where everyone decides their liver needs a holiday, but the local pub landlord wishes you'd reconsider. While taking a break from booze might sound noble, it's not quite the same story for the hospitality and drinks sectors. For many pubs and breweries, Dry January feels a lot like the Monday morning after New Year's Eve – bleak, quiet, and slightly hungover. Last Orders: The Pub and Brewery Squeeze Let’s not sugarcoat it – pubs in the UK have been shutting faster than you can say "pint of bitter, please." According to the British Beer and Pub Association, the UK has lost over 1,800 pubs in the last three years alone, averaging 10 closures every week. Beer sales in pubs dropped by 6.6% in 2023, a big blow after the pandemic years. Breweries? They’re feeling the pinch too. The Society of Independent Brewers reported a net loss of 13 breweries in 2023, with the North of England hit hardest by rising costs and declining demand. Enter Tryanuary – The Hero We Didn't Know We Needed But fear not! Like a plucky underdog in a feel-good British film, the drinks sector is fighting back with its own initiative – Tryanuary. Instead of avoiding the pub like that one mate who owes you a tenner, why not pop in and try something new? Whether it's a local craft beer, a quirky gin, or a non-alcoholic concoction that tastes suspiciously like happiness, there's plenty to explore. The initiative isn’t just about boozing – it’s about keeping the social spirit alive and supporting businesses that keep our communities buzzing.

Who or What is (Krombacher) Beer? A Social Event.     What is Beer? What is Craft beer? What is Natural beer? What is Macro beer?   What do these terms mean to Independent Operators, small to medium Multiple Outlet Operators and the wider industry?   I’m sure to all operator’s different beer means different things whether that be margin, brand awareness, taste, volume, ease of dispense or simply a point of difference.   Having been at #Krombacher Brewery now for several years, I work and have worked with all types of operators.   While we are Germany’s leading family-owned and operated brewery and a genuine, authentic Import beer, we still operate as a challenger brand in arguably the most competitive beer market in Europe. Our Importer #Morgenrot Group first shipped Krombacher Pils kegs more than 35 years ago and in 1968 we won first and second prize at the International Brewing, Bottling & Allied Trades’ Exhibition in London.   We tend to do things a little differently.   Come and find out –   This is an open invitation to the trade but a limited one.   Krombacher will be holding a small Social Event in Marylebone, London on 18th September with one of our amazing independent On-Trade partners, Andy who runs The Royal Oak. Pigging-backing on the excellent summary Viliano has posted below. Some very interesting stats there backing up what we can see being played out (even beyond dry-January). For me the interesting part is how we should allow this to affect the environments No-Lo beverages are consumed within. Is the thirst there for a third way between daytime cafe/coffee culture and the traditional adult bar/pub environment. What does this look like? Sounds like a best of both worlds to me and something to celebrate, especially when food-pairings enter the mix. I've not seen it yet but a clear option to include No-Lo taps on the bar front in health clubs too. The more EV-forward vehicle environment has already impacted longer stays at service stations, with the cleverer operators embracing the accessible work stations and higher quality cafe offer needed to support a 30-60 minute service stop. A natural opportunity for a zero-alc pint to relax whilst you scale that email-mountain too? As an enthusiast of all things with wheels, no-lo drinks are clear bedfellows for a car-centric meeting point or cycle cafe. All the hospitality and social interactions but with a less wobbly, license-friendly journey on the way home. Theres a lot to be said for a real, high quality grown-up drink and the environment it demands, whether day or night.
