On August 17th, AHBL’s landscape architecture team hosted a pop-up at the Seattle Design Festival titled “A World That Loves and Nurtures All”. This model-sized board game invited participants to imagine a world where collaboration is key to building and improving our communities. The game posed the question, "What if we lived in a world that loves and nurtures all?" and challenged players to rethink what is essential for our city and home. #AHBL #AHBLLife #SeattleDesignFestival #landscapearchitecture #community #popup #designfestival

Here's the most recent thought... What if we bring a huge techno fest to the central park in the summer, and it only happens when it rains cats and dogs in the city? What if we also insert a little serendipity into the event? NYC is the biggest small town, like what tied Tes and Tracy together was the yellow umbrella they both thought was their own, here we "accidentally" pick up the wrong yellow umbrellas, and see if it ever comes back. #experiential #experientialdesign #concert #event #architecture #environmentaldesign https://lnkd.in/eE-jfpAk

🌿✏️ Embracing the essence of World Landscape Architecture Month: LISTEN. . .THEN DRAW. 🎨💬 Engaging in the public outreach process isn't just about sketches and blueprints—it's about truly hearing the heartbeat of a community. 🏞️💭 Understanding their needs and desires lays the foundation for meaningful design. Remember, it's not about imposing our vision; it's about amplifying theirs. Let's prioritize listening before we sketch, ensuring our landscapes reflect the dreams and aspirations of those we serve. 🌟 #WLAM2024 #CommunityFirst #DesignWithPurpose #communitygreenspace

I recently completed writing this article after procrastinating it for so long. It explores how humans perceive and interact with urban space. It discusses how people's sense of orientation and spatial intuition are influenced by their environment, and how this perception shapes their experience of a place. The article also touches on the concept of "Genius Loci" or the Spirit of Place, emphasizing the importance of architecture in creating meaningful places that help people connect with their surroundings. Give it a read and leave comments!

The Value of Public Space: What is Hostile Architecture? Urban design plays a crucial role in shaping human behavior and restricting public space use. Hostile Architecture is a term used to describe design elements that discourage the use of public spaces by certain groups of people, such as homeless individuals. Examples of Hostile Architecture include anti-homeless spikes and "the Mosquito," which emit high-pitched sounds to deter loitering. Such design elements have a negative impact on community engagement and democratic participation. As we explore the implications of Hostile Architecture, it is essential to keep in mind the core objectives of the MAAT project. The project aims to create inclusive urban environments that empower all residents. By joining the conversation, we can learn more about how urban design can either facilitate or hinder community engagement and democratic participation. Did you know we celebrated the first graduating class of the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program during our 2024 Spring CAPLA Convocation Ceremony? We share a few of their stories beginning with Emma Hughes '24, BLA. "Landscape architecture is about how we can successfully connect and guide people through space. How can we help bridge community ties? How can we re-connect people to the natural world around them, especially in highly dense urban cities?" Read her story: https://bit.ly/3wwsElQ
