Dive into global impact with our Year 10 Bialik students at the GALESS 2024 conference! 🌏💧 Four brilliant minds, Benji, Emma, Orly and Tom, have been making waves—literally. They spent months researching water security, inspired by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal #6 (Clean Water & Sanitation), and presented their findings at an international conference right here in Melbourne! But it wasn’t all science papers and presentations. 🌿 The students got their hands dirty, filtering water using everyday materials in a Makerspace challenge led by Andreas Kammel. They explored wetlands, experimented with ecosystems, and swapped research with peers from Australia, Germany, Singapore and Thailand. 🌍 Talk about a global classroom! 🌊 Why does this matter? In a world where climate change and water scarcity are growing concerns, these students are learning how to make a real difference. By engaging in evidence-based research, presenting solutions, and connecting with international peers, they’re taking bold steps toward securing a sustainable future. 💧 The GALESS takeaway? Innovation Marathon Hackathon The Innovation Marathon Hackathon, a central event of the European University Festival, will be a 72-hour hackathon culminating in October 2025 during the festival itself. However, the journey toward this event will begin as early as March 2025 with an official presentation at the European Parliament. During this ceremony, the festival will be formally announced, marking the start of preparatory work involving universities and researchers from across Europe. Starting in March, participating universities will have the opportunity to form interdisciplinary teams and begin developing innovative solutions to climate challenges such as sustainable energy, waste reduction, and urban resilience. This preliminary work will culminate in the Innovation Marathon in October, where projects will be finalized and presented. It was indeed exciting and eye-opening to participate in the #GlobalSTEAM2024 conference, networking with sustainability experts and peer professionals in the exploration of groundbreaking ideas in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math for sustainable development. From innovative designs to green technologies and policy advancements, the 7-hour conference offered a wealth of insights. Major highlights; 📌 Keynote speaker Richard Elelman emphasized the indispensability of 'citizenship engagement’ (one of the pillars of CASSANDRA - a socio-political approach to climate change) for problem-solving endeavours. He criticized inter-agency rivalry and diplomatic problems amongst partner countries over responsible work (capacity-building for effective communication). 📌 The power of interdisciplinary approach in building bridges to a sustainable future as reflected by research works on sustainable solutions and green technologies in textile engineering by Dr. Rabia Almas, the intersection of art and engineering for sustainable product design by Getahun Mekuria, the future of renewable energy systems and broad schemes to overcome existing barriers by Iheanacho Denwigwe, the essentiality of Mathematics for sustainable development by Dr. Christiana Nkuturum, biochemical pathways to producing biofuels by Daniel Uti, the significance of blended learning in education by Dr. Adedayo, technologies for the development of sustainability-oriented mental models to strengthen collaboration and systems thinking most specifically for historically underserved students by Avneet Hira, and sustainable utilization of agricultural residues for biomass energies by Elif Ülküm Ekşi. 📌 Commendable presentations by peer professionals around effective strategies for climate education, urban resilience, and biodiversity management. Reflecting on the Umeå Transformation Research Initiative (UTRI) First Annual Conference "Actions for Sustainable Transformations" I had the honor of attending an insightful first edition conference hosted by UTRI on Thursday, November 28, 2024, which aims to highlight research efforts towards better future. The conference spotlight research contributions toward a sustainable world, broadening the concept of transformation and exploring how it can be applied across various research field. The following are some key takeaways that struck a chord with me: 1. Innovative Analytical Techniques for Circularity and Sustainability: The session on understanding materials at their most fundamental level offered insights into how elements move through society and strategies for increasing circularity. It was a reminder of how technology and interdisciplinary research can drive meaningful societal change. 2. Building Capacity for Transformative Research: A workshop on capacity building emphasized the importance of equipping young researchers with cross-disciplinary skills. The interactive discussions highlighted how we, as emerging professionals, can operationalize societal changes toward a sustainable future. 3. Human-Building Interaction and Climate Adaptation: Exploring the Intelligent Human-Buildings Interactions Lab (IHBI) was fascinating. It demonstrated how occupant-centric building design and energy-efficient solutions can make a tangible difference in climate change adaptation, especially in Nordic contexts. 4. Understanding Disaster Management in a Climate-Challenged World: Discussions on disaster management and climate adaptation reinforced the importance of integrating preparedness with risk mitigation. Real-world examples brought clarity to how these areas intersect in managing crises, from hurricanes to industrial risks. 5. Communication Challenges in the Green Transition: The session on societal green shifts in Northern Sweden explored the pivotal role of communication in fostering social innovation and inclusivity during industrial transformation. It was a reminder that communication is not just about information but also about empowering participation. What I Gained: This conference was a transformative experience. It deepened my understanding of sustainability challenges, enriched my perspective on cross-disciplinary approaches, and inspired me to think more critically about my own role in advancing these conversations. As someone passionate about environmental economics, sustainable development, and fostering change through research and practice, I found this event incredibly impactful. The Israeli Climate Forum presented a position paper at HIT - Holon Institute of Technology, focusing on harnessing campus-city relationships to address climate crisis preparedness. The meeting included forum leaders, an organization founded by Israeli President Isaac Herzog. The paper highlights academic campuses' potential as change agents in tackling environmental and climate crises. It emphasizes the academic sector's capacity to develop educational spaces that drive change, demonstrate solutions to environmental and climate challenges, and foster urban initiatives involving students, faculty, and the surrounding community. HIT considers leading this initiative a core mission, as each faculty engages with climate and sustainability issues in various ways. Responding to a proposal from Dov Khenin, Chairman of the Israeli Climate Forum, HIT's President, Prof. Eduard Yakubov, committed to spearheading efforts in this field. #ICATALIST had the honor of participating in the International Congress on Sustainability Research and Innovation 2024 (Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress)🌍, held from June 10 to 14 in #Helsinki. This event brought together scientists from around the world, as well as political representatives, funding agencies, and #NGOs, to discuss joint solutions to tackle the major challenges of sustainability 🌱. As part of the Rexus Project, where ICATALIST leads participatory activities, our colleague Bárbara Willaarts organized a session to exchange experiences on how to ensure research projects have a greater social impact 📊. During this session, case studies from various parts of the world were presented, addressing complex issues related to climate change adaptation 🌡️ and the need to promote cross-sectoral approaches in decision-making. The purpose of the session was to share experiences on best practices and highlight areas where transdisciplinary approaches need to be strengthened 🤝.
