Absolutely, I understand the confusion around the roles of software engineers and developers, especially with the ongoing debate on whether #HTML, #CSS, and #JavaScript alone define one as a software engineer. While these languages are foundational for web development, they represent just one facet of the broader software development landscape. Being a Software Engineer, means you not only excel in coding but also possess a deep understanding of engineering principles and be able to navigate the entire software development lifecycle, from conceptualization to design, implementation, testing, and maintenance. It means you’ve a profound grasp of algorithms, system architecture, and the ability to design scalable and maintainable solutions. Although these classifications can vary from company to company, they provide a useful framework for understanding the expectations and responsibilities at each career stage of a developer. Development: 1. Junior Developers: The Foundation of a Career   Junior developers typically have up to two years of experience and focus on making the code work. They require more guidance and code review by more experienced colleagues. These professionals demonstrate a strong desire to develop and learn, accepting constructive criticism and learning from mistakes. 2. Mid-Level Developers: Advancing in the Career   With an average of two to four years of experience, mid-level developers perform tasks with greater independence. They not only have more versatile technical skills but also understand and translate business requirements into technical solutions. The ability to understand and improve code design and optimization is essential at this level. 3. Senior Developers: Leading with Experience   Senior developers, who may have over four years of experience, are marked not just by their years in the industry but by the maturity with which they approach work and solve problems. They make strategic decisions, minimizing costs and maximizing business benefits. Excellent communicators, they also act as mentors to lower-level developers. Important Note: The experience times mentioned for each level are for reference only and can vary significantly from developer to developer. Career progression depends on a combination of factors, including technical skills, project experience, the ability to solve complex problems, and interpersonal skills. Conclusion: Understanding the differences between developer levels assists in hiring and team formation, as well as providing a clear path for professional growth. The career path of a software engineer is a mess. We’ve wrapped our identities around tools, not the craft. We call ourselves "JS developer", "Python developer", or even using libraries or framework name "React developer". That makes sense from a business point of view.—companies want tool experts. Why is that bad? Because it puts us in a dangerous position. We become as useful as the tool that the market needs. What if that technology stops being relevant? Or what if there are too many people offering that knowledge?  How easy would it be to pivot to something else then? The logic is that unless you have production experience with such technology, you can't work with it. And we’re to blame for that. We’ve pigeonholed ourselves. We obsess over tech, labeling ourselves as the tech we've worked most with. Sometimes it also makes sense from an engineering point of view. If you master the tool, you minimise bugs and rework. But how often does it happen that you need to work on a problem that requires DEEP knowledge about that technology? It could be useful on a few occasions, not always. Think about it, you spend most of your days working on building features that are hardly complex. And maybe some of you do. But how many? The whole industry needs a complete shift in mindset.  Not only developers, but all the "technologists" working in tech.  We should all start from a common ground, speaking the same language. Start as generalists and specialise in something when needed, not just because. Designers, learn to code. Developers learn to design. We both should understand business and product. Of course someone can decide to do more of one thing than the other. It should be like doctors, everyone starts at the same level to specialise in a specific domain after. They all speak the same language. And if worst comes to worst, they can intervene in a different domain than theirs and help out. Maybe I’m crazy, time will tell.

You are not a developer unless you have a job title of "Software Engineer" WRONG! If you code. You are a developer. Whether it is bad code or good code. Whether its DSA's, simple APIs or even just a static website using only HTML and CSS. Whether it is an app, open-source, or educational exercises. If you write code, you are a software engineer. Do not feel any less of programmer because you don't have a paid position. If you are stuck in the job hunt and are a bit loss... do what any developer does, find something to code.
