Every day in construction is different. That’s one of the perks. It’s exciting. It’s stressful. It’s thrilling. It’s emotional. It’s rewarding. It’s never the same. A project manager working on a fit-out scheme in the city would need to put on a very different ‘hat’ to manage a refurb of a listed building in the countryside next. Yes, there are similarities and some aspects of the role remain the same, but it’ll take a different mindset to deliver the project to the ultimate standard and clients' expectations, because they are very different clients wanting very different things. Same applies when tendering for a project for a law firm in the city and then jumping onto a bid for a technology company. Many similarities in terms of process, but to truly deliver an experience for each client that’s entirely specific to both, at the time you need a different mindset and approach. You need to immerse yourself. Be the client. See like the client. Feel like the client. There is still an element of a one-dimensional culture in terms of a role. The role is this and you do that. In reality, it’s just not the case. The sheer diversity of the environment we build is continuously evolving as are the technical requirements and therefore the ‘role’ must also evolve. But how can we make people feel more equipped when faced with having to work outside of their comfort zone and are still expected to deliver an impeccable service? We must nurture and encourage individuality. Encourage expression of creativity. Support ideas and make sure people feel heard. This also means creating a working environment where people can be themselves and openly express it. This also means interests outside of construction. Build resilience. I can guarantee that there will be lots of occasions where the ‘extra-curricular’ interest will overlap with a sector or client. Think Netflix, Facebook, and so on. Ultimately, by nurturing uniqueness and actively encouraging a culture of innovation and authenticity with the people around you, we can ensure that people ‘feel’ confident to adapt, evolve, and deliver exceptional results in an ever-changing landscape when the challenge arrives. In the world of commercial real estate, sometimes the most exceptional talent comes from the most unexpected places. With a background in product development and brand marketing, my journey has been anything but conventional. My career has always focused on creating exceptional experiences, a skill that Cushman & Wakefield saw the potential in, integrating it across the breadth of commercial real estate services. A few days ago, I went to a popular restaurant in town with some friends to unwind. The experience ended up a reminder on how it is more difficult to sell a SERVICE than to sell a PRODUCT. I just sat and observed friends complain about the sub par service they received, even though the services provided where exact from the last time. it reminded me of a valuable lesson during my time as a facility management Project Manager: it’s not just about meeting expectations, it is about navigating how those expectations evolve. When I first resumed as the Project Manager, everything seemed straightforward. The client wanted us to ensure the smooth operation of their office and residential buildings, with specific deliverables like prompt maintenance response time, efficient management of resources, and energy optimization. The plans, timelines, and performance metrics were well laid out. As time went on, their needs and expectations began to shift. First, the client wanted a stronger focus on sustainability and resource optimization, and asked we incorporate energy efficient solutions into the maintenance strategy. Then, they requested more focus on providing excellent customer experience at all cost. Next, they were interested in employee satisfaction and safety, suggesting the working environment was directly impacting service delivery. Before long, they were looking to us as advisors on long-term property upgrades, rather than just service providers. This is the reality of selling and delivering a service. Unlike selling a product, where the transaction often ends at the point of sale, services like facility management are dynamic. Client expectations aren’t static, they grow as their business goals, market conditions, and even internal priorities evolve. Managing these demands required more than just technical expertise. It calls for proactive communication, regular performance reviews, and a willingness to adapt. Each change in expectation meant renegotiating deliverables, revising plans, and finding creative ways to deliver more value without compromising the contract’s scope. Contract variations were always a regular and Adhoc projects initiated to meet these evolving demands. I bet Obinna A. Okechukwu and Anthony Onyenakorom can write an encyclopedia off this topic. The most challenging part? Balancing the need to meet new demands with maintaining operational efficiency and profitability. Is it worth it, absolutely! These experiences creates a stronger partnership with the client, a reputation for adaptability, valuable insights into how businesses relationships evolve and providing more opportunities to sell other services. In service delivery, clients don’t just want static experience, they want solutions and experiences that evolve with their goals. One thing my resume might not represent well is how much I've learned about Real Estate. I've done the labor work of renovating and building residential homes for over 25 years. I've planned and managed the renovation projects including timeline and budget for 9 properties. I've managed long and short-term vacation rentals, including 2 internationally. I've managed the build of a 9,000 sq ft boutique hotel spa, internationally. I have more than a handful of connections here on LinkedIn that I've done some of the hard work with. But what am I really trying to say? That no matter what the work is, I like to know as much as possible about what I'm getting into. I like to be able to analyze the project or scenario with all of the facts and figures. I like to be able to know what the expectations are. What does a project look like when it's done? How will you know when it's done?
