Table D1 from SPAN is a tabulation on the number of pumps and type of pumps allowed for selected flow rate of each pump. Thus, from the system flow rate, we need to go through the table to see which row it falls on.
If flow rate calculated is less than or equal 300m3/hr, then use 1 duty and 1 standby pump, either horizontal split casing or end suction pumps. If flow rate is less than 100m3/hr, use end suction pump.
If flow rate is between 300m3/hr and 2000m3/hr, use 2 duty and 2 standby pumps and only split casing pump.
Otherwise use 4 duty pumps and 2 standby pumps.
