There are certain times in your life—when you get to choose who you want to be from that day forward. For example, the new year and birthdays are times when you can rebirth yourself by taking on a new identity. For example, when you celebrate a birthday, you might say, “Oh, another year passed, and I’m another year older. I don’t have the time to create the things I want to create in my life.” Instead, you could see your birthday as an opportunity to choose who to be for the next 12 months…or years. You could tell yourself, “This year, I choose to be ____.” Fill in the gap with a descriptive word, like happy, carefree, a writer, an artist, the owner of a brand new business, or healthy. A new identity helps you take the necessary actions to create what matters to you. So, choose who to be, and you will move toward your goals and visions much more quickly from that point. What I believe to be true is that we do better work when we are connected. I also believe in order to be better connected we have to be able to share our stories in a way that allow them to be heard and understood. We need to know our audience and purpose. We need to know where people can enter our story and just how much we are willing to share. We have to know the short and long version of our stories and why on earth we are talking when it might be better to listen. At The Mother Heard, I have put together tools and resources to help moms tell their stories for the purpose of building community. As an educator, I believe that every one can learn to tell better stories and our nation needs us right now to engage in many ways. My way is to engage with stories and build a community so that when we are trying to make a point or bring someone to our side of an argument that we are prepared with the skills to do it well. National Cousins Day on July 24th recognizes the lifelong relationships that grow among cousins. Our first friendships often form with cousins as young as infants and endure a lifetime. Whether cousins grow up together in close-knit families or only see each other occasionally, they share common memories through grandparents, aunts, and uncles. At family gatherings, cousins entertain each other and get into trouble together, too. They celebrate birthdays and might even blow out the other’s candles to their cousin’s annoyance. When their siblings irritate them, cousins become an ally. Sometimes cousins seem more like siblings, especially if they’re only children. Even in families who no longer gather for regular reunions, cousins tend to reach out to each other later in life and revisit the shared memories of being family. If your cousins are like brothers and sisters or you became best friends growing up, staying in touch with them may not require a special day on your calendar. If you’re from a small family or one where the wanderlust gene is dominant and you’re not quite sure where all your cousins wandered off to years ago, celebrating cousinship takes a little more effort.
