The AI war is on. Today, Alibaba announced: "Qwen 2.5-Max outperforms ... almost across the board GPT-4o, DeepSeek-V3 and Llama-3.1-405B," Alibaba's cloud unit said in an announcement posted on its official WeChat account, referring to OpenAI and Meta's most advanced open-source AI models. Let's have a look at some valuations, multiples and metrics. OpenAI was valued at $157bn in its recent funding round. Expected revenues for 2024? $3.7bn. For 2025 this will jump to $11.6bn. Earnings? No, OpenAI will have lost about $5bn in 2024. Alibaba? EV/EBITDA 5.9x for 2026. P/E of 10x. Market cap $233bn ($104bn cash on balance sheet, FCF ca. $23bn for 2026). More than $20bn for buybacks still approved. My point? You decide if potential tariffs vs China are in the price. Chinese tech is innovative and trades at historic discounts to the U.S. tech space. The relative is insane. Also consider that interest rates are not zero anymore in the U.S. (when cash burning did not matter as much for that reason). - Yes, as you know, there are ways to play HK tech in SA, too. Below the MAG7 vs BABA. Long-term graph.

🔄 Alibaba's Power Play: The Real Stakes Behind Their Latest AI Release Alibaba just dropped Qwen 2.5-Max, claiming it outperforms DeepSeek-V3, GPT-4, and Llama. But look beyond the benchmarks - this rapid release reveals a seismic shift in AI competition. Here's what makes this fascinating: DeepSeek disrupted the market not just with performance but with a radically different approach: open-source models at just $0.14 per million tokens. That forced Alibaba to slash prices by 97% - and now they're racing to compete on performance too. The implications are huge. When a startup can force tech giants to reduce prices AND rush out competing models dramatically, it suggests the traditional "moat" of massive compute resources isn't enough anymore. Smart architecture and efficient development might matter more than raw spending power. Watch this space: Are we moving toward a future where open source and cost efficiency become the key battlegrounds? Alibaba's rapid response suggests even the giants are adapting to this new reality. The real winners might be developers and businesses who will benefit from better models at lower costs. #TechStrategy #Innovation #OpenSource #Competition
