Couple days ago an emergency medicine physician posted that " Emergency Medicine is not a job, it's a lifestyle". His words got stuck on my mind and I noticed that the skills I've gained from working in emergency medicine have automatically translated into my daily life. I've become a master of triaging, prioritizing tasks, and managing my time effectively. I never thought I'd be the person who could calmly handle a crisis, but now it's second nature to me. Whether it's a family emergency or a work project, I know how to stay focused and keep my cool. One of the most important skills I've learned is expectation management. 🤔 In emergency medicine, you have to be prepared for anything, and that means managing expectations with patients, families, and colleagues in addition to expecting the disaster and prevent it from happening. I've found that this skill carries over into my daily life, too. Whether it's managing my own expectations or communicating with others, I've learned to be clear, concise, and realistic. So, if you're considering a career in emergency medicine, know that it's not just a job – it's a lifestyle. You'll gain skills that will serve you well both in and out of the hospital. A doctor on duty, and a 5-year old child in a hospital. For a good 5 minutes, I stood still after writing the above few words because I actually don't have words. It isn't a good hook, and it doesn't have to be, since this isn't a post for "personal branding" but it is something "personal". As someone who has studied healthcare, as someone who's in and out of hospitals everyday for work, as someone who deals with patients of all kinds, I cannot help but think. Is this the environment where I'm going to be 24/7? Are these the kind of cases I hear everyday? Could that, by some unfair twists of decree, be me? Someday? As healthcare professionals, we save so many lives on a daily basis, be them doctors or nurses. Even a janitor in a hospital is doing so much good, regardless of the fact that he's just doing his job. I cannot help but think how that doctor would have felt in that moment. Would she have regretted saving so many lives only to get hers taken away so selfishly? I wonder what that kid will think when she grows up, and realizes what she went through at such a little age. I'm reminded of all those girls who spent years and years studying medical, but wouldn't be allowed to practice now because of some filthy people. I wonder if saying "not all men" is the solution to this problem. I wonder if there's a solution to this problem at all.

There's something truly fulfilling about working in a fast-paced environment where every minute counts. When I was a kid, my mom always said my favorite word was "why?" "Why can’t I play with my dolls in the fireplace?” "Because the fireplace isn’t a playground." "Well why can’t it be one?" Sound familiar? I'm sure many of you can relate (to the 'why' part, unless you also enjoyed playing in fireplaces…🙈). As kids, we were all little detectives, trying to make sense of the world around us. As an ICU nurse, I learned that asking "why" could literally be the difference between life and death. Literally. Why is my patient's blood pressure crashing? Why are they suddenly confused? Why is their monitor showing runs of v-tach? And sure, I've probably annoyed my coworkers with all of my questions (I have) just like my poor mom, but "why" helped me think critically and advocate for my patients when they needed it most. It made me a better nurse, and now I use my "why" skills in a different way. Why wasn't chest pain protocol followed? Why are there discrepancies between nursing and physician notes? Why wasn't the patient's condition escalated to a higher level of care? Asking "why" helps me piece together the often chaotic puzzle of a medical case and figure out what really happened. But you don't have to be a nurse (or a kid) to benefit from asking "why." It's a skill that comes in handy in all areas of life. Why haven't I pursued that hobby I've always been interested in? Why do I keep saying yes to things I don't have time for? Why haven't I reached out to that friend I've been thinking about? When we ask ourselves "why," we can get to the root of our problems and find real solutions. So, here's to all the curious kids out there who never stop asking “why?” 💖
