More than 50 countries are due to hold national elections in 2024... and AI is a big concern. Tech companies are putting safeguards on their own generative AI tools that can manipulate images and sound, while also working to identify and label AI-generated content so that social media users know if what they're seeing is real. #artificialintelligence #ai #politics #technology #election #fraud ABC News The Associated Press

AI won't be an issue in just elections within the United States this year, but around the world. As Axios notes, "It's the first time in 60 years that the U.S. and U.K. are voting for new administrations in the same year and the first time since 2004 that the U.S. and EU are." The implications of the use of AI are large, and like the rest of the digital space in the US, individual states and companies are implementing policies that could have unintended consequences. Are you using AI within your work? What areas of concern do you have about it? Let's talk about it. #politicaladvertising #ai #artificialintelligence #politics #regulation #regulatorycompliance #digitalmarketing #digitaladvertising

It’s easier to make a generative AI deepfake than you might think—and we don’t mean that as a positive note on accessibility, especially in an election year. This ability is available to candidates, conspiracy theorists, foreign states, and online trolls who want to deceive voters and undermine trust in our elections. That’s why on May 3rd we went up to Sacramento to talk to experts and advocates about how to craft policy and establish the guardrails needed to ensure that AI can be supportive of, not detrimental to, democracy around the world. These were our major takeaways. https://ow.ly/n8GX50RG13g

Research from Center for Media Engagement - The University of Texas at Austin confirms fears that AI use is already widely used in political campaigning, and not usually for good. "...the lack of regulation and consistent industry standards will provide space for malevolent actors to develop and use these tools without legal, technical, or ethical guardrails for election integrity." The study suggests that generative AI poses the biggest risks for smaller elections, whereas larger elections are more scrutinized and better regulated. #AIMisinformation https://loom.ly/R5JacGk

This is NOT a political post. Be aware, be informed, and be careful with what you believe this election season and beyond. In conversations and presentations this year, I have begun cautioning others that this is a legitimate concern. This is just one incident of many more to come. If it can happen in politics, it will happen in many more instances. "As a tight 2024 presidential election draws ever nearer, experts and officials are increasingly sounding the alarm about the potentially devastating power of AI deepfakes, which they fear could further corrode the country’s sense of truth and destabilize the electorate. There are signs that AI — and the fear surrounding it — is already having an impact on the race." Welcome to the generative AI election era: Panic responsbily. Around 1 billion voters will head to polls all over the world this year, with campaigns and underfunded election officials alike under pressure to use AI for efficiency. Why it matters: Conditions are ripe for bad actors to use generative AI to amplify efforts to suppress votes, libel candidates and incite violence. 🔭 Zoom out: This year, more people will vote than any other year between 2004 and 2048. It's the first time in 60 years that the U.S. and U.K. are voting for new leadership in the same year, and the first time since 2004 that the U.S. and EU will. Several U.S. states have passed legislation banning or requiring disclosure of political deepfakes, including California. Arizona election officials conducted a two-day exercise in December, designed to help them spot and respond to deepfake videos. https://lnkd.in/eGdruPUz #AI #election2024

The United States is now entering its first-ever generative AI election. AI deepfakes will inundate our political discourse and voters may not know what images, audio, or video they can trust. We’ve already seen fake Biden robocalls and videos of a Chicago mayoral candidate. Forbes https://lnkd.in/gszGqt-a So how can legislators tackle this issue before it tackles democracy?
