It’s been such a natural fit for an org like Centre for Public Impact to collaborate with WonderLab on a Melbourne DesignWeek offering! We both love learning and a few things have really made a more mutual learning posisble. 💡Generosity of ideas and a clear commitment to working in relational, creative and affirming ways, (which seems to be part of the dna of how WonderLabbers show up in engagements), means we build/maintain relationships, and can have more trust in eachother, curiosity about differences in opinion, and give and receive feedback well. 📆I think having the scheduled time available with the explicit intent of testing ideas and getting feedback is one of the most impactful and easy to implement hacks to build a culture of learning. It’s also bloody hard to protect space and time for learning and build habits as a team. 3….? I’m super curious what others are doing to develop practice, and hold space for learning from and with eachother. What’s your favorite tip, or something you’ve seen done well?!
🌟 How do you develop practice in your community? 🌟 In a format designed by our director Lisa Grocott, one of the mainstays of our practice community is the 'playtest' - where we prototype workshops before we facilitate them with stakeholders or the public. We also 'playdate' - taking an idea that might be useful for many peoples' practice and playing it out together. This is a regular entry in our shared calendar, and anyone can grab a spot. Our Melbourne Design Week workshops for this week have all been through this process, helping to refine their flow and share practice on facilitation and co-design (woot-woot 🎉 to workshop leaders Anna Conrick, Myfanwy Doughty, Lisa Grocott, Leander Kreltszheim and Allison Edwards). This process knits us together as a community, building generative vulnerability in how we present, and generosity in how we respond to others' work (with thanks to Rachelle Chadwick's 2023 great paper on feminist critique). We all get to learn from these gatherings, and the community gets stitched together across multiple projects and ideas. How do you approach this community building work in your context? This Friday, September 27, a public conference hosted by GSAPP’s Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture, approaches the question: WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ENTITY WE CALL “THE STATE” AND THE BUILD ENVIRONMENT? To reframe this question, this one-day conference draws from recent literature that has challenged the conception of the state as an autonomous monolith that exerts uniform power on the world around it. What does it mean to understand the state, instead, as an entity that gains its coherence from its effects? How can architecture, understood as a state effect, help re-conceptualize the state as a central conceit in modernity? Invited speakers include: Cole Roskam (HKU), Daniel Abramson (BU), Sophie Cras (Paris 1), Yara Saqfalhait (GSAPP), Sheila Crane (UVA), Sonali Dhanpal (GSAPP), Brodwyn Fischer (UChicago), Brian Larkin (Barnard, Columbia), Bruno Carvalho (Harvard) STATE EFFECTS is open to the public, but RSVP is required for non-Columbia affiliates. To attend in person, please email: buellcenter@columbia.edu by Wednesday September 25 to reserve your spot. "It's no secret that design education is very expensive. The return on investment does not equal what you put into it, which means you are either getting people who are over-leveraging themselves and taking on debt to get a degree that they may not ever be able to pay back, or you are only accessible to members of a class that can afford that level of education." Erin discusses why architecture education could benefit from a closer look at equity and outcomes. I am thrilled to announce that I will be a keynote speaker at the **9th International Academic Conference on Places and Technologies**, taking place in Pécs from July 8th to 9th, 2024. Beauty is no longer enough to judge the built environment. What's the role of an architect in the face of today's most pressing issues, such as climate change and excessive urbanisation? Are architects a blessing or a curse? My keynote will focus on the responsibility of architects to go beyond mere aesthetics and make informed decisions to ensure that their work makes a positive contribution to sustainability, resilience and societal well-being. As urbanization continues to accelerate, the need for sustainable, liveable urban spaces becomes ever more urgent. The conference will focus on #humancentered design and foster interdisciplinary discussions on methodologies and ideas that enhance the liveability of our built environment. Key topics will include: 📗 The role of human behaviour in architectural design 📗 Integration and future of built heritage 📗 Planning and design strategies for diverse social needs 📗 Multidisciplinary cooperation and future technologies I am especially honoured by the kind invitation of Prof. Dr. Gabriella Medvegy of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology -University of Pécs. I look forward to discussing these issues with other keynote speakers and experts such as Olga Mihalikova, Prof. Arch. Adolfo F. L. Baratta PhD and Prof. Dr. Gábor Zoboki DLA habil of Zoboki Design & Architecture, sharing insights on how we can leverage technology to create more livable urban environments. Join us in Pécs for what promises to be an inspiring and impactful event! Dearest fellow rulers, I’ll be honest, and feel free to share your thoughts. Many of us entered architecture school because we wanted to blend creativity with science, seeking a career where our innovative spirit could thrive. But the reality? Sleepless nights, constant stress, rejections, and the undervaluation of our work can sometimes make us question it all. But what if all that hard work is preparing us for something more? What if our foundation in architecture is the key to unlocking limitless possibilities? The Legacy Initiative—a platform designed to redefine architecture not just as a draftsman’s role, but as a creative powerhouse that allows you to design impactful solutions across any sector. Through stories and memories, we preach this message. We embrace an Africanfuturistic approach, but more importantly, everything we do is rooted in God’s wisdom and guidance. This is a movement for those who believe in designing for man, his spirit, and his environment. Join us on this journey. Now, let’s talk about what we’ve been preparing for months—the Legacy Showcase. In collaboration with Covenant University, Hebron Startup Lab, and the Society of Architecture Students, we’re almost ready to launch an event tailored for those who want to become God-Creatives. Here’s what to expect: 1) Legacy Exhibition: Showcasing selected works from God-Creatives, alongside opportunities to network with top firms and companies for business and career growth. 2) Design Talks Symposium: A panel discussion led by God-Creatives on architecture, design, and revolution. 3) Premiere of The Architect’s Memoir and Launch of the Legacy Journal: A short film documenting the memories of the graduating class, along with the introduction of our new journal. Early bird tickets will be released soon. Respectfully, D.C. Wisdom The King's Son #thedesignrevolution #godcreatives #africanfuturism #thegoldstandard

Trevor Bullen is the Dean of the School of Design at Dunwoody College of Technology. He is an award-winning architect with over 25 years of professional experience who believes design is synonymous with 'discernment.' He sees a tension in Higher Ed between the rise of pragmatic or career oriented degrees and the decline of the liberal arts. Trevor appreciates the both the benefits and challenges brought about by technological advancement in the design industry that facilitate design and encourages students to resist losing their design voice while using new tools. In Ep. 74 "THE COMPLEX AND EVOLVING WORLD OF DESIGN EDUCATION" of the NXTLVL Experience Design podcast Trevor and host David Kepron talk about the changing landscape of architectural education. The survey results in the following article regarding architectural licensure are incredibly important. It describes a disturbing trend I have watched over the past 10-15 years as an increasing number of talented, hard-working professionals have been shut out of becoming licensed. I hope educators and firm leaders consider what they can do to improve opportunities for the current and next generations to become licensed, as well as identify and create other pathways to contribute to the profession and be compensated equally without becoming licensed.
