The journey to becoming a true leader is dynamic and lifelong. One opportunity that has enormously reshaped my leadership model is participating in the regional YALI training for young leaders across West Africa. Aside from the robust supply of knowledge I acquired during the training, one thing I found super rewarding for my leadership pursuit was how collaborative the program was designed. Collaboration was an intrinsic part of the training and I gained direct and indirect insights on this subject while engaging in various collaborative activities. Some key outcomes I discovered about effective collaboration are that it promotes innovativeness, fosters inclusivity & healthy connections, improves decision-making, enhances individual & team growth, boosts active communication, and strengthens problem-solving, among others. Collaborating with my coaching group members, pitch team, coaches, and the entire coordinating team was such a profound experience. I have become more excited about collaboration and know how to approach it better for highly successful outcomes. One of the most pervasive misconceptions about leadership is that it is predominantly associated with corporate environments and formal organizational roles.
