Acknowledging the Unseen Heroes Around Us There are so many heroes around us: unseen people who do amazing things every day. From the single mother raising her kids to the entrepreneur building a startup, and the waitress sharing her radiating smile, so many individuals deserve more recognition. Think about the dedicated teacher who spends extra hours helping students succeed, or the healthcare worker tirelessly caring for patients with compassion. Consider the janitor who ensures our spaces are clean and safe without expecting any praise, or the delivery driver who braves all weather conditions to bring us essential goods. Remember the community volunteer who selflessly gives time to support local initiatives. How about stopping for a minute to acknowledge them and sharing with them that you see their efforts, skills, and motivation? It takes you a minute, but it can make their day. Love the idea of public service but don't want to become a politician? 20 years ago, I attended the Democratic National Convention. I was working on the presidential campaign at the time. There, I witnessed a then-state senator talk about unifying red states and blue states. It was inspiring, but it didn’t spark a desire to run for office. Instead, it made me realize that there are countless ways to serve your country without stepping into the political arena. Here are a few ways you can make an impact: 1. Mentorship Share your knowledge and experience with the next generation.    2. Nonprofit Work Join or support organizations that align with your values. 3. Community Involvement Volunteer for local initiatives or serve on community boards. 4. Advocacy Use your voice to champion causes that matter to you 5. Military service Be a part of something greater than yourself (I joined) You don't have to hold a political title to make a difference. Service comes in many forms. Find the one that resonates with you and dive in. How are you serving your community?

Despite the increasing need, Black Americans have less access to #opioid use disorder treatment and recovery services than white Americans. #FOREgrantee Center for African American Recovery Development is looking to fix this, by helping to develop four new Black-led recovery community organizations to address a wide array of health inequities we see in access to substance use treatment and recovery support services. We know that solutions to the nation’s #opioidcrisis will not be successful without explicitly addressing the racial disparities in our systems of #prevention, #treatment, and #recovery. #BlackHistoryMonth

January 11 is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. At Delta Air Lines, we have long been in the fight against #humantrafficking. It is my greatest hope that one day this horrible industry is eradicated – but until then, the best weapons we have are education and awareness. I was joined by our partners at Street Grace for an insightful fireside chat on the global impact of human trafficking, where we discussed methods of prevention and advocacy. My biggest takeaway is that technology is playing a bigger and bigger role in human trafficking amongst our most vulnerable, children and adolescents, than ever before. Human trafficking is the second largest criminal industry in the world. It can happen to people of all ages or backgrounds – men, women and children. Each of us has an obligation to humanity to join this fight and it begins with education and awareness. If you’re flying with Delta this month, you can engage with content curated in partnership with survivor justice expert Polaris (formerly Polaris Project) on select aircraft through Delta Studio. Of course, customers can always donate miles to Polaris through SkyWish all year round as well. By donating miles, SkyMiles members can support victims on their road to safety and provide critical services to survivors. Together with our customers, we have flown more than 300 survivors to safety and to critical services to support their recovery. I’m so proud of the continuous work Delta does to lead this fight. More than 90,000 employees have been trained to spot signs of human trafficking. ONE’s updated Position Paper on Veterans' Policy For your awareness, please find ONE’s updated Position Paper on Veterans Policy. ONE receives assistance from many quarters in support of veterans of the Defence Forces. This has enabled the organisation to: 1. Open and sustain its current four homes 2. Develop fifteen veterans support centres and thirty – three branches nationwide 3. Plan the delivery of additional homes 4. Put in place a range of supports for veterans, with specific focus on mental health support. The sustainability of the aforementioned must be ensured and ONE believes that the facts we have created on the ground should be enshrined in a Government Veterans’ Policy thereby ensuring continued support for veterans in need. This support will be strengthened by research into areas affecting veterans and fortified by having a cross governmental agency tasked with co-ordinating the delivery of Veterans’ Policy – The Office of Veteran Affairs. ONE recommends that the next Programme for Government includes:  * A commitment to develop a comprehensive Veterans’ Policy. * A reaffirmation of the commitment to establish an Office of Veterans Affairs.
