Our @svamfadesign’s Fresh Grad feature is none other than Raven Mo. We asked Raven to share one significant lesson for emerging designers and students of design. Here’s what she had to say: “To make impactful work, we need to make grounded work that moves beyond designing for ourselves. I learned that a thought-provoking question deserves a well-researched answer, which requires stepping out of designing, and actually understanding who you are doing this for, why, and how. This doesn’t entail moving pixels with Adobe Creative Cloud. This means, walking down the street and talking to people you never thought you would meet in an attempt to build a more empathetic worldview. Doing work this way is hard, and yet it must be. Even if it’s uncomfortable and leaves you full of doubt. Working in a way that involves the experiences of people from all walks of life means that our work won’t sit solely in a portfolio where it interacts with no one. The reward of responsibly diving into a world that we are not familiar with means that our work impacts others, but more so, it means that we are designing in a world where people from all walks of life no longer advocate for just themselves alone. If everyone stuck to comfortably swimming in the ponds of our own upbringing, we would have lived in a world where only Black designers advocated for Black designers, and only Asians spoke against Asian hate. The world needs designers to be humble allies who are willing to unlearn and reeducate, and who are listeners with the drive to help amplify and advocate.“ Raven Mo is a designer based in New York, specializing in identity systems and multi-scriptural typography research. With a passion for exploring the intricate social relations and infrastructures woven by type, Raven's design practice places heavy emphasis on type advocacy. These projects take forms in lettering and type design, as well as in multidisciplinary endeavors such as designed objects, event series, and entrepreneurship. All these efforts aim to evoke reflections upon typographic cultural identity and design localization. Thank you for following along with our Fresh Grads features; be sure to get your tickets to see Raven present her project, “Flourish” Thursday, June 6th with us.
