It was a pleasure today to chat with a group of third-year design students looking to get ahead at getting a job in what they love. It's not easy. You gotta be savvy, stand out, hustle like a boss and don't take any highbrow shite. Know what you want and go for it. So of course I shared how moons ago I didn't do any of that and sort of wished I did. That said, I probably wouldn't be here in Plymouth with Brand Biscuit Studio. Swings and roundabouts. But that's the exciting thing they don't teach you at uni, that life is what you make of it and how much you want it. Whatever 'it' is to you. You can't teach passion and acting on a big vision. It's something you learn through your personal journey of discovering what makes you happy. I went through as many no's and not-so-great experiences as positive ones that have landed me here today. My one solid piece of advice for any student leaving uni this summer is to not be determined by an end-of-year portfolio. We hire people, not portfolios, and skills can be filled or learned by working collaboratively with others. Go out there, be bold, be relentless, and never underestimate the power of your passion and determination. It's been said that colors can provoke different emotions that will naturally lead to a change in mood or behaviour. Environmental colour studies have shown that cool colours (blues, greens and purples) have shorter wavelengths and, therefore, have a calming effect on people. These colours improve efficiency and focus, and promote restfulness and calm. Warm colours (reds, yellows and oranges) on the other hand, have longer wavelengths and have a stimulating effect on people. In the classroom, these warmer colours can over-stimulate the students and negatively affect their classroom behaviour. Having a passion for design, and experimenting over 20 years in the classroom, I can concur with the research indicating the benefits of cool colours in the classroom. I have witnessed firsthand the change in my students' behaviour based on the cool, calming colours they are surrounded by. Pastel coloured cotton (purchased from Spotlight or similar) will always adorn my classroom walls, as will the use of pastel colours when designing labels and display posters. Obviously, there will be occasions when bright colours are necessary (it is a room filled with bright characters after all!), but these are not my main colour palette for our learning environment. It is also no coincidence that the colours chosen when branding Bonnie Mentoring are cool pastels! Teaching drawing is always a joy. However, it's important that the students genuinely want to learn. It's one thing to spark their interest with clever tactics and psychological strategies, promising academic success or distinctions. But it's entirely different, when it is from the joy of learning the techniques and skills, with no other agenda. I don't claim to be an expert, nor am I a graduate of an art or design school. Yet, I've developed a framework based on my personal experiences in sketching and drawing. This framework has been refined continuously through each teaching session. In my practice, I simply draw and design. Sometimes I wonder if 'art' and 'design' are just terms used for categorization, status, or commercial purposes. Despite repeating the fundamentals yearly to classes with varying abilities and dynamics, I approach each lesson as if it were new, adapting naturally to the unique environment. Witnessing the enthusiasm of keen students is delightful. Even my colleagues teaching the same subject sit in, wanting to learn both the methodology and the techniques along with my students. Conversely, it's disheartening to teach those who view the work as a chore. These students often enroll due to parental pressure, course availability issues, or because they don't fit into other programs. They are the ones who are frequently disengaged, sleeping, or finding reasons to leave the classroom. For the students, two hours, equivalent to four periods, fly by. Observing their progress, both rapid and gradual, helps me anticipate their future needs. Each class is unique, as is each student and each day.
