## Jim Thorpe’s Disqualification: A Tale of Triumph and Injustice 🌟🏅 Jim Thorpe, often hailed as the greatest athlete of his time, made history at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics by winning gold in both the pentathlon and decathlon. His unparalleled athletic prowess and iconic moments, like winning the high jump in mismatched shoes, cemented his legendary status. Yet, Thorpe's achievements were overshadowed by a significant controversy. ### 🏅 The Golden Era Thorpe's feats were nothing short of extraordinary. The King of Sweden himself dubbed him the greatest athlete in the world. His Olympic performances set records that lasted well into the 20th century, showcasing his versatility and dominance across multiple sports. ### 🚫 Disqualification Drama However, Thorpe’s Olympic success was marred by the IOC's rigid and, at times, discriminatory rules on amateurism. The IOC disqualified him, citing violations of their Victorian-era standards—rules that were frequently bent or ignored by white athletes without consequence. This decision was seen as elitist and racially biased, casting a shadow over Thorpe's accomplishments. ### ⚖️ A Long Road to Justice Despite the initial disqualification, Thorpe’s legacy remained a point of contention. After significant pressure from supporters and a reevaluation of his case, the IOC finally returned his medals in the early 1980s, acknowledging the injustice. Jim Thorpe’s story is a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by athletes of color and the ongoing struggle for fairness in sports. #JimThorpe #OlympicHistory #Stockholm1912 #AthleticLegend #IOCControversy #DisqualificationDrama #AmateurismRules #SportsInjustice #ThorpeMedals #LegacyRestored

Can we use Naval Architecture to discuss the Olympics? I think so. The Olympic pool is 2.15m vs. 3m deep and there are complaints of a "slow pool". The physical reason discussed in the story linked makes some sense but I was wondering what else it could be. At first I thought it could be shallow water effects but looking at the dispersion relation and the speeds the wavelengths mean those two depths are functionally equivalent. What then? Blockage effects! Looks like the differences seen in this paper seem pretty significant on the scale of Olympic level competition: https://lnkd.in/eWx2JFnA Case closed? Comments? Go Team USA!

Where has the press coverage been? This must surely rank as one of the greatest sporting achievements in British history. But it is far more interesting than that! Tracey Edwards MBE had a mission, a purpose and a Theory of Change. She wanted to find the best sailors in the world and she went looking in places that were not the usual spots to find the exceptional talent. As well as winning one of the toughest sporting challenges... bar none... she wanted to encourage more girls into STEM subjects and she wanted to prove to women and girls that they can be the best in the world - in what is still a male dominated sport. Not just her... me too 🙂. There are so many reasons to find this crew inspiring, if you are interested in #teamwork, or #DEI or #mission or #TheoryOfChange or #STEM then you will learn something from their story. And the fact that they won! Take that patriarchy! Go Maiden Factor! RACEhttps://lnkd.in/eZJDMP3R

Did you miss the goals yesterday? Watch the highlights here. So proud of the team and staff. As the only all female club left in Norway we are fighting for survival. We still need new sponsors or investors that wants to be a game changer. Having to sell 8 starting players during this season, we are still winning games and still developing young talents. The fact that we are still fighting for top 3 is an enormous achievement and our young talents are playing semifinals in the cup. The dynamics in football is constantly changing. Depending on some Champions League games next week, the Norwegian league can move up in ranking to top 6 in Europe finally passing Sweden. Giving us 3 spots in CL and one in EL. So exciting times for Norwegian women’s football. As one of the most successful clubs, we believe there are potential for growth with the rigth people and investors joining us. #womensfootball #womenssport #toppserien #uwcl #soccer Steve Hawthorne Nancy Hensley Mercury/13 Kynisca Capelli Sport
