#GenAI - friend or foe of job seekers? Long ago, at the beginning of my career, I asked my friend (from IIM) why companies always want to hire from IIMs. Why this disparity? We non-IIM people also learn fast and work hard. He gave me a very profound answer. He said hiring from IIMs is a quick, guaranteed, and lazy way of hiring good people. Companies seek proof of intelligence and hard work. People from IITs/ IIMs provide both. Companies generally assume that if a candidate has worked so well in academics, they will do well professionally. While IIM teaches many things, you should also consider that they are already training the best students in the country. Candidates with a CAT percentile of 99%+ get an opportunity with top institutions. The selected group already consists of hardworking people who slog their way to IIM, so they will automatically give better results. Fast-forward 15+ years, and the hiring mindset is still the same. The big difference is that job-seekers have Gen AI, a powerful tool that many people consider a mind-reading genie.  We encourage students and potential candidates to use Gen AI to build resumes, explore project ideas, write direct messages to employers, and more. Based on my recent experience, relying entirely on Gen AI gives you a very standardized language or structure. So, it makes all resumes look homogenous. Thanks to ready-made message templates on LinkedIn, all direct messages are the same, with skills separated through a pipe symbol. While job seekers assume Gen AI-written content will help them stand out, unfortunately, that's not true because many others follow the same process. Busy recruiters, whose attention span on each resume is said to be 6 seconds, will never be able to judge which candidate is better because of this homogeneity. So, if companies can afford it, busy recruiters will turn to pedigree "only" as a proven source to hire talent. The ineffective use of Gen AI will not help candidates land better jobs but rather diminish opportunities. In the era of Gen AI, it's essential to use our human creativity and original ideas instead of simply following the machine's suggestions. For instance, 1. You can brainstorm with Gen AI on your ideas and explore all angles, but make your own conclusions. 2. Write things in your language; you may improve sentence structure using Gen AI, but don't let Gen AI make your statements verbose. 3. Use Gen AI to learn best practices for making resumes and highlighting project work or experience. But implement these suggestions by yourself. Don't let Gen AI write things on your behalf. #Originality will be a rare asset in the world driven by Gen AI because it makes everything look alike. Gen AI is a powerful tool; we should use it to explore the ideas we are unaware of, but let's not use it to think on our behalf. Image credit: ChatGPT 😉 #hiring #HRtech #FairOpportunity
