The SEC’s new proposed Cyber policies could be devastating to RIAs who are not prepared. Here’s what you need to know: · Breaches must be reported to the SEC within 48 hours and, if material, all clients must be informed. · Breaches must now be listed in a firm’s ADV and are permanent. Here are three questions to ask yourself: · Does your firm have stated policies and procedures regarding cyber security? · Does your firm have annual penetration testing to certify your policies? · Does your Cyber policy cover funds transfer fraud AND social engineering? We have solutions: · Make sure that your tech stack includes dual authentication. If you’re in search of a cloud-based IT partner, we’re happy to provide recommendations. · Have confidence that you have the right coverage in place in the event of a loss. Cyber Security Awareness month has to be the lowest and probably a negative return on investment. All the crap we thought we could fix by "educating" people is being used more and more by attackers. Here's a real cyber tip for October: Your users don't care about cyber security. They just want a computer that works and an inbox that isn't full of junk. If you think you're going to secure your org by "educating" your users - staff up your IR team and know your cyber insurance policy inside and out.

It is a multifacetted problem where a lot of the people creating the training programs inside organisations lack the skillset of effective educators so the training is bad or they just buy mediocre prepackaged training that consists of a slide deck and a quix. The training (I don't think awareness campaigns are effective at all) needs to be effective and is crucial to improving the resilience of staff and leaders to compromise. That doesn't just make being breached harder but also reduces the probaility of fraud risk as a second order effect.

DNA testing firm 23andMe has reached a $30M settlement with 6.4 million U.S. citizens impacted by last year’s data breach. The breach, caused by a credential stuffing attack, exposed personal information due to weak password management by customers. Despite the payout, 23andMe has denied any wrongdoing, claiming the compromised data didn’t include sensitive financial details like social security numbers or driver’s licenses. However, the incident raises crucial questions: 🔸 Can companies truly escape liability when their services are compromised due to customer errors? 🔸 Even if financial information wasn’t exposed, personal data can still be weaponized in social engineering attacks. While 23andMe is now enhancing security measures, including multi-factor authentication (MFA), this breach serves as a stark reminder that no system is immune to cyber threats. Data breaches have long-lasting consequences. As always, strong cybersecurity practices and awareness remain key. #CyberSecurity #DataBreach #23andMe #CredentialStuffing #SocialEngineering #MFASecurity #PrivacyMatters

Fraud is a real threat. Last month, it was discovered that my information had been compromised, leading to a gradual hacking of each account, from my business server to my personal bank accounts. Everything was compromised in some way or another. Despite working as an Anti-Fraud leader in the banking sector, assuming it could never happen to me was misguided. It only took one compromised account for the entire situation to unravel. Reflecting on this experience, I wanted to provide a thorough review of how we can better protect our information. -Use a password manager like LastPass, 1Password, or Bitwarden to generate and store complex passwords for each account. -Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) wherever possible. Apps such as Google Authenticator, Authy, or hardware tokens provide an additional layer of security beyond passwords. -Maintain secure backups of your important data in case of ransomware attacks or hardware failures. Use services like Google Backup and Sync, iCloud Backup, or physical backups on encrypted external drives. -Stay informed about common phishing techniques, scams, and best security practices. Regularly update yourself and your team on emerging threats and how to mitigate them
