5 design principles for Wear OS Apps by Google 1. Focus on critical tasks: Don't try to cram a full app experience onto a tiny screen. Instead, focus on one or two key tasks that users can complete quickly and easily. 2. Optimize for the wrist: Make sure your app is easy to use with a glance and a tap. Avoid complex interactions that require users to hold their wrist up for extended periods of time. 3. Think complementary, not competitive: Your Wear OS app should work seamlessly with the user's phone. Consider how the two devices can be used together to accomplish different parts of the same task. 4. Keep it relevant: The watch is always with the user, so make sure your app provides relevant information at a glance. This could be anything from the time and date to fitness stats or upcoming appointments. 5. Design for offline: Not all watches have phone connectivity or SIM cards, so make sure your app can work even when the user is not connected to the internet. I’m seeing a trend in companies that are in the tech industry. Or more specifically in the app industry. Are we done with apps? It’s been 15 years since the release of the very first iOS SDK. Allowing developers create native apps for the iPhone and not just web based apps. Others followed and so did the app stores. Is 15 years too much or does this industry have more years on its sleeve? Maybe it’s time we start engaging in some new technology. VR comes to mind. But what about apps for devices that are less common, like the Apple TV, or even smart watches. Maybe we’ve given too much focus on the phone that it has become a stagnated market. And just maybe, it has become boring for the users. Even though this post may sound pessimistic, it was not meant that way. It’s just a reflection of what’s happening and an eye opener of potential things to come…

Google Play Introduces Policies to Boost App Quality. Google Play has implemented policies to enhance app quality on the platform. Existing developers must comply with updated verification requirements, while new developers are required to test their apps with at least 20 people for two weeks before seeking production access. Google Play is also increasing investment in app review processes to combat abuse and improving app discovery by providing users with information on how an app may perform on their devices. Furthermore, Google plans to introduce new signifiers, starting with a badge for official government apps. The platform is also supporting the RISC-V open instruction set architecture in Android, allowing developers to build, test, and run Android support for RISC-V. Additionally, Google aims to finalize the NDK ABI and make canary builds available on Android's public CI, as well as provide emulators for testing applications on various device form factors, beginning with wearables.
