One of the greatest myths about addiction is that it only happens to a certain kind of person. This myth often leads to people who don’t fit into this archetype not even realizing that what they’re experiencing is addiction. It also helps to fuel much of the stigma around addiction and recovery. Chris Doyle is a graduate of Simon House whose life started out entirely normally. Nothing stood out in his childhood that suggested he would experience addiction, nor did he fit into the stereotypes of who people assume will experience addiction. Chris’s story is poignant for us because it shows that no matter who you are, what race you are, your socioeconomic status, your gender–none of it matters. Anyone can experience addiction, which is why fighting the stigma attached to it is so important. Over the coming months, we’re sharing our graduate stories to celebrate the success we’ve had over the past 40 years.
