To the outsider, production roles can sound confusing. A prime example is ‘Assistant Director’, one of several jobs with 'director' in the title. So, what do they actually do? The AD is the backbone of any shoot, ensuring everything runs smoothly and on schedule. They're in charge of: 1️⃣ Scheduling The AD creates the shooting schedule, making sure each scene is shot in the most efficient order. 2️⃣ Coordination They coordinate between departments so everyone knows when and where they need to be. 3️⃣ Time Management The AD keeps everyone on track, managing time to avoid delays and ensure the production stays on schedule. 4️⃣ Health and safety They ensure all safety protocols are followed, keeping the cast and crew safe during the shoot. 5️⃣ Problem Solving From last-minute changes to unexpected issues, the AD is the go-to person for quick solutions to keep things moving. In short, the Assistant Director is an organisational powerhouse behind the scenes. They ensure the production stays on track and everyone is where they need to be. It's no small task, and it's fair to say a good AD is worth their weight in gold! Looking to hire an elite production crew to shoot a video for your brand? When you're involved with a film project, especially a feature, it's crucial to leverage that as best you can to keep your momentum moving in the right professional direction. We all want to be working on projects that excite us, so when you have anything out there in the world, you should think, 'How can I utilize this to further my career?' It can involve writing a press release, posting on social media, or reaching out to people you want to collaborate with. Telling people about a project you're involved in, even if it's a small part, shows that you are also invested in the success of that project. People who make films are attracted to that type of energy. If a filmmaker has to twist your arm to help promote a film you were involved in—whether as an actor, editor, colorist, sound technician, gaffer, PA—it doesn't matter what you did, that film is your opportunity to reach out to people. What better reason to tell people what you've been up to than to say, 'Hey, I wanted to share a film I PA'd on. It was a great experience, and I learned so much.' The producer, assistant director, or whoever will respect that kind of outreach and take a mental note. It's also a great way to stay on someone's radar. So why press releases, even if you have a small part? A press release means you control the narrative, shows that you understand that every film needs marketing, and even if you aren't paying to get your press release out and posting it on free platforms, the fact that you capitalize on a moment means you're moving up, you're a force to be reckoned with. It also doesn't hurt that when someone googles that project, that press release that you posted can show up. Even if it doesn't get picked up, you can still post it on a free platform and then post that on your website under press. A person who doesn't capitalize on projects doesn't get noticed and we live in a world where that means something. Even the effort means something so I hope you leverage any and all opportunities. #film101 #indiefilmmaking #filmmarketing

They can be the first job you get, and they're a position where you don't need much experience to start. But what exactly do production assistants do? And how much can you expect to make? Today, I want to go over the job of the production assistant and talk about how important they are on set and how valuable your time working as one can be if you can get your foot in the door. And if you have other questions about film crew jobs, check out our breakdown of every job on set. Ready? Let's jump in. 'Wonder Woman' behind the scenes Credit: Warner Bros. What Does a Production Assistant Do? And How Much Do Production Assistants Make? Hollywood is full of jobs that people outside the industry have never thought about. But to make movies and TV shows, hundreds if not thousands of people have to be employed. The very lowest on the totem pole is the humble production assistant, or PA. Without them, nothing would ever happen. What Is a Production Assistant? A production assistant, also known as a PA, is a member of the crew on a film and TV show. They are entry-level jobs on set, reserved for people who are breaking into the industry. The job of a PA is different based on the specific needs of the set and the size of the production. It also matters whether or not the production you're on is union or not, because the union can guarantee you more pay and better-defined roles. There are times when specific PAs are attached to the filmmaker or actors and help them out as individuals as well. 'Fatherhood' Credit: Netflix What Does a Production Assistant Do on Set? Your job as a PA will vary depending on the size of the budget as well as your relative experience on set. More experienced production assistants might be helping the director or writer exclusively. Someone new might stand at the end of a road and make sure no one drives down it. The basic job each PA has, no matter how experienced, is to help the 1st Assistant Director make sure that the production has everything it needs. That means you'll be doing tasks for pretty much every department. It's difficult to say exactly what you can expect to do on any given day, but suffice it to say you'll be doing everything and anything the 1st AD asks of you, whether that's moving things from point A to point B, wrangling cords, grabbing coffee, or setting up props. If you're unsure how you should prepare for the job, check out these dozens of tips on how to prepare for your first PA gig. What Are the Production Assistant Hours on Set? PAs work very long hours. Their shifts are usually 12 hours but can go upwards of 16 hours, thanks to overtime. There are specific laws concerning how long you can work on set one day and what time you would have to report the next day. Make sure you learn what's legal i...

How I went from a 9-5 entry-level video producer to film & TV show executive in 2 years: And the 5 key habits I’ve traced along my career journey that helped me get to where I am today: 1. Consistency I lived and breathed filmmaking and put in the hours. Even with a 9-5 full-time job, I would work nights and weekends to create short films and refine my craft. I dedicated consistent time and effort to execute my film ideas little by little. 2. Personal brand & self-promotion Once I had my first few short films ready, I decided to upload them to social media and YouTube. My first big opportunities came from uploading content to the internet. 3. Timing & market trends If the genre of the film you are making is trending upwards, your odds increase. Since 2016, I have focused on building my own organic community and movement in the women's sports space. That just so happened to be the next wave. 4. Community-building & networking Every week, I went to film events in my niche to meet new people and network. I started to meet connections that knew my content from social media, and those connections turned into collaborators, and in some cases, branded & commercial job opportunities. Imagine if I never posted? 5. Mentorship Face to face time with someone who's already done it is the easiest way to jumpstart your filmmaking career. Do everything in your power to surround yourself with like-minded people, become a part of a community, and learn from someone who has walked the walk. - Ready to take your career to the next level?
