Call for Abstracts: Utopian futures and just urban planning I am co-hosting a panel with UiS colleagues and Fremtenkt at Storbykonferansen in Oslo October 24-25. Utopian thinking is becoming an important instrument in urban planning. In this panel we wish to explore future oriented instruments and their role in shaping images of just, democratic, and sustainable urban futures. Researchers from University of Stavanger and Fremtenkt will present results from the projects New European Bauhaus Stavanger, and Climate Neutral Bergen 2050. We are inviting submissions of papers for a new Special Issue! It is exciting to partner up (once again) with outdoor thermal comfort legend Prof Marialena Nikolopoulou (who was also listed among the 2% most influential researchers in the world - https://lnkd.in/demvAinr) to host as co-editors a Special Issue on the adaptation to the climate emergency through design and the senses. For this special issue we place the haptics of temperature and heat within the wider context of the diverse sensory environment and question how we can redefine the design of urban environments through the synergy of senses, climates and different cultural contexts. We are particularly welcoming both scientific and creative interdisciplinary approaches that support inclusive design and address social inequalities in connection to environments of urban (dis)comfort and people’s experiences, from high level interrogations to bottom up design-led investigations. This could include, but not limited to: health and well-being research projects, urban climate walks, interactions within sense-scapes, multisensory navigation and wayfinding and inclusive design. The call for papers invites submissions of an international reach, keeping in mind how extreme weather events are spreading rapidly across the world, further feeding the climate-driven migration crisis. Happy to share the completion of the 'Urban Nature: Connecting Cities, Sustainability, and Innovation' course at The International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE) - Lund University -Lund University by Coursera This course provided invaluable insights into the practical applications of #NatureBasedSolutions Here are my key takeaways: 1.Increased knowledge on urban nature and nature-based solutions. 2.Deeper understanding of the relationship between cities, nature and innovation. 3.Improved critical thinking on the opportunities and challenges for nature-based solutions to contribute to transforming cities. 4.Expanded ability to use systems thinking to assess nature-based solutions. 5. Explored the Naturvation project by the European Commission, uncovering crucial barriers and drivers for urban nature studies. 6. Learned from real-world case studies in Berlin, Barcelona, Salzburg, and Lomma, showcasing the implementation of nature-based solutions. 7. Insightful 'coffee break with researchers' discussions, gaining valuable insights into tools and methods for urban nature research.

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning’s Urban Climate Research Center is set to host its annual Anthony J. Brazel Lecture on Monday, Feb. 3. Urban sustainability and resilience expert Timon McPhearson will present his work on developing more sustainable cities. Preceding the event, the annual poster event will showcase current urban and environmental research at the university. Both events are free to attend. Funding secured to create a new Coastal & Inland Waters Heritage Science Facility! 🌊 The project aims to use the specialist expertise of marine and maritime research at the University of Southampton to accelerate the development of technological solutions to climate change. 🌍 Project leader and one of our SMMI Deputy Directors, Professor Fraser Sturt, explains: “Climate change means our oceans are warming, storms are becoming more frequent and coastal and river flooding are more likely. This poses a threat to the future of many vulnerable heritage sites which lie in the sea just off our shores, in waterways and submerged in lakes. “These sites can unlock hidden histories – telling us about how people once lived, how they moved and migrated, traded, and shared ideas and sadly also where conflict arose. However, the sites are also often difficult to explore due to shallow waters or rocky inlets.” Provided by The UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the £2M package will help fund 3D scanning technology and remotely operated vehicles to explore our waters and preserve maritime heritage sites - including shipwrecks, historic ports, and ancient dwellings – in millimetre scale detail. 🔎 Find out more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/evxFg6gA
