🚀 Exciting times at the kickoff meeting of our ERASMUS+ funded project, Dis4Food! 🌐🍽️ Thrilled to represent the The European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians (EFAD) alongside brilliant minds from the Laboratory of Food Chemistry & Analysis at the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA). Our mission? To place dietitians at the forefront of digital disruption in diet and food. Dis4Food aims to design an interactive training curriculum to elevate dietitians' digital skills, focusing on food data literacy. We're diving deep into food composition databases, data quality standards, and the EU food data ecosystems. Our goal is to boost the confidence and proficiency of dietitians in utilizing digital tools and open-access resources, with a special emphasis on reaching those in remote areas. Technology, in the last 20 years it’s come so far. I remember when we first started using mobile phones and this revolutionised how we communicated; quickly they moved from being a nice-to-have to a must-have tool on the land. Even then, I used to marvel at the grain sector's adoption of technology more broadly and often thought that livestock development and adoption was lagging, but that's really changed in recent years. There are so many new and exciting advancements in our sector, and at Harmony we're always keen to try new tools and techniques. Let's keep it up. BEC PhD student Mohammed Mahdi about his work in the Uprise Food Safety Project UP-RISE is a Horizon Europe project that will provide new knowledge for understanding mycotoxin contamination in the informal sector, prediction of mycotoxin contamination, improving risk assessment tools to strengthen regulatory frameworks, and developing innovative tools for reducing mycotoxin contamination in fermented food value chains, thereby aiming for safe food systems for all. https://lnkd.in/gF-haBF2

Meet ANSC graduate student Kanike Eshwari “Hello, my name is Eswari Kanike. I am a graduate student in Dr. Mary Anne Roshni Amalaradjou’s lab. My research focuses on controlling Listeria monocytogenes on alfalfa seeds during both storage and sprouting using aerated water. This approach aims to enhance food safety by reducing the risk of contamination, while exploring sustainable and effective methods for pathogen control in food systems. This innovative approach has the potential to enhance food safety by reducing contamination risks in sprouted seeds, which are vulnerable to microbial pathogens. By exploring aerated water as a non-chemical intervention, my research offers a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional sanitizers, benefiting both the food industry and public health by minimizing the risks of foodborne illness.” 

After a successful first year, the Niche Meat Processors Assistance Network is bringing back its 12-month educational course designed specifically for small meat processing plants. A GLOBAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE The School of Public Management and Administration (SPMA) is proud to highlight the accomplishments of Rodney Asilla, a Public Policy PhD candidate, for his successful participation in the global Feed-Protect-Care Collaborative. The Feed-Protect-Care initiative is a collaboration between the University of Montpellier (France), the University of Pretoria (South Africa), and 15 other universities globally. The programme aims to foster multidisciplinary research, focusing on the creation of sustainable food systems from local to global levels, while also emphasising food security policy. Rodney’s participation in this training session was a remarkable opportunity for him to engage in a multidisciplinary approach to food security. The programme included a comprehensive analysis of the food security policy in Piracicaba, São Paulo, through a combination of lectures, field visits, and discussions with key stakeholders in the region’s food system. Rodney and other participants explored the complexities of local food systems by visiting farms, cooperative industries, and markets, gaining valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities in creating sustainable food solutions. Reflecting on his experience, Rodney acknowledged the significance of the multi- and transdisciplinary grounding provided by the Public Policy PhD programme at the University of Pretoria. Rodney also expressed gratitude for the global collaboration fostered by the platform, which allowed him to form meaningful connections with fellow researchers and experts from around the world. He emphasized how this experience has deepened his commitment to transdisciplinary research and global-scale collaboration, which he believes are essential for tackling the multi-faceted issues facing the world today. This experience exemplifies the value of global collaboration, multidisciplinary research, and the power of education in driving meaningful change in the world.
