Our current COMMON DILEMMA 2 month COMMON 1st yr Plumber/Gasfitter course (Student has approx 1 year field experience) No Plumbing, Heating or Gas code is taught. Basically shops, no rough-ins and some irrelevant theory subjects. 3 months PRE-EMPLOYMENT Plumbing /Gasfitting (Student has basically no field experience) The course has the same parameters as common, except it is 3 months long. Non Apprentice courses Student has no field experience, including self registered students, introduction course to pipe trades Included in this short (few days) course, plumbing code and plumbing rough-in is included. 1) Which course would you pick if you had a year of field experience? 2) Does common for regular 1st years have to be tweaked or eliminated? 3). Should some irrelevant subjects be taken out of common, in order to teach code and rough-ins? 4). Should more plumbing, heating and gas basic subject matter or theory be taught in common 1st yr? 5). Should common be extended to 3 months? 6). Why didn’t we just leave pre-employment intake and use it as common for no field experience? 7). Should common be shortened to only 1 month and revert back 4 regular yrs of code related teaching? 8). What is the cheapest way to improve the system? 9) Doing nothing is what we are currently doing, and we are currently cramming code. This is INCORRECT! 10) If you truly believe our education system is about the students, PLEASE COMMENT. It’s important to note after asking as many instructors and students (plumbers, gasfitters, sprinkler fitters and and Steamfitter/pipefitters, what they think of their experience in common 1st yr. What do you think the majority said?
