If you are not following the struggle happening now in Bangledesh, you are missing the opportunity to learn-a lot. Not just about revolution, but also about what happens after. Last week marked a huge win for the people of Bangladesh thanks to the student/worker/union-supported uprising, which successfully resulted in the collapse of a 15-year reign of a corrupt government in less than 36 days. Mohammad Yunis, a Nobel Peace Prize Winner, was sworn in as a temporary leader. My handful of Bangladeshi students here tell me that although their friends back home tell them things look like a war zone (police stations burned out etc), that this is a breakthrough, a good thing, and that they have real hope this will result in real, lasting change. But the win is just part of the story. What is often overlooked is what happens after a government collapses: In this case, the people, not a foreign army, are working collectively and collaboratively to restore order and provide community care needed-by organizing themselves. All eyes on Bangladesh Hindus Bangdesh or Hindudesh. The recent protests by Hindus in Bangladesh highlight a critical juncture in the nation’s socio-political landscape, prompting a conversation about the need for a distinct identity and representation for this minority community. As the Hindu population, which has dwindled from 22% in 1951 to approximately 8% today, faces increasing violence and discrimination, the demand for a “Bang Desh”—a homeland specifically for Hindus—gains traction among some segments of the community. This article argues that such a demand is not merely a reaction to current events but a necessary assertion of rights and identity in a rapidly changing Bangladesh.

If vandalising their properties, burning their houses and shops, arresting them without proper warrants, preventing peaceful protests, targeting their temples and filing petitions to ban their religious organisations are not considered communal violence, then what is? For Muhammad Yunus, however, all these acts are 'political in nature and not communal.' But how are attacks on minorities given ground by regarding the violence as political? If placing the saffron flag above the national flag of Bangladesh is considered an act of sedition, what would the act of stomping the Indian flag be considered? If terror suspects are being granted bail in Bangladesh, why has the request for Chinmoy Krishna Das’s bail been denied? If the entire world went ballistic on social media over the Rafah attack, why have they gone hush now? Why is no one heeding the voices of minorities in Bangladesh? The caustic remarks by the interim government about Hindus’ religious organisation, ISKCON, should be utterly condemned. They labelled it a 'religious fundamentalist organisation.' A petition has also been filed in the Bangladesh High Court seeking a ban on the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Is this an attempt by the Bangladesh government to obliterate minorities? But why? For political parties, minorities have always been an easy target. I don't know what to say other than that I hope my loved ones in Bangladesh are safe from torture and murder. In the chaos that Hasina has caused, a vicious gang is looting stores, ruining sculptures, and killing people. Think about how you feel about the 23 days of people speaking out against authoritarianism and whether you support their actions. Countless lives have been lost and countless more have been imprisoned in the struggle against injustice. Are you betraying their sacrifice by turning a blind eye to these damaging actions? Just like the Awami League has accused the BNP and Jamaat in the past, the Chhatra League and the Awami League have been accused of attacking minorities, looting, and destroying state property in identical claims that have been circulated on Facebook and in the media since yesterday. Thanks to the video evidence, we know exactly who is responsible for these crimes. Words like these give the criminals the will to do more harm and make them believe they will never face consequences.
