This year's Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-24), hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Kampala, Uganda, focuses on regulating impactful fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), the space sector, and climate change. This event marks the first time these critical areas are at the forefront of regulatory discussions. Cosmas Luckyson ZAVAZAVA, PhD., ITU's Telecommunications Development Division Director, emphasized the importance of "regulating for impact" by defining policies that guide transformative technologies for the benefit of humanity. Effective regulation, he noted, requires creating an environment where technology and socio-economic development advance together. The symposium includes a dedicated AI session addressing ethical aspects, standards development, and risk mitigation for responsible AI and robotics. Discussions will focus on strategies to mitigate risks and foster trustworthy AI systems, highlighting the necessity of ethical considerations in AI deployment. GSR-24 also delves into the burgeoning space economy, exploring regulatory measures for inclusive, safe, and sustainable space-based applications.
