Great bit of end-of-the-week reading produced by Maggie Kinsella and the Khalifa University Science and Tech Review team on the ways in which #AI is transforming industrial sectors. We appreciate you including perspectives from our CEO, Dr Chris Cooper, on how "we expect AI to expand into every area of the [Energy] industry in some way or another.” #EnergyforAI #AIforEnergy Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dz8rSuQs

Will the Climate survive AI's Environmental demands? Well, I've been asking the reverse question. Will AI's growth be curtailed by humanity because its demand on environmental resources will create scarcity for human beings as well as accelerate climate change too far? Will AI growth plateau because we just wake up and realise we need energy security for homes and work as well as need water to drink for our survival? Something I was discussing with Lorenza Clifford. Every AI prompt, function or image you process ...how much water, how much energy does it use? What's the carbon footprint cost to the Climate? Not much..but now multiply that by all the prompts you do each day, week, month and year. Multiply that by the billions of people using AI globally. That's billions of litres of water. That's billions of phone charges worth of energy, every day. You really think AI is an innocent affordance? Ethically, is it worth it for your conscience or its cost to humanity as well as life on Earth? I'm lucky if I use AI once or twice a week for more than a few prompts a time. I'm sensitive to each prompt costing water and energy. What conservation are you practicing? If it came down to it, and AI disappeared, I personally wouldn't miss it.
As new energy intensive generative AI models are being launched and talked about, reading this piece from The Guardian, arguing that despite efforts to do better and more with less, we may be facing a Jevons Paradox, where the increased capabilities and vertical applications of AI could lead to greater overall consumption of energy due to heightened demand and growing reliance, not less. Food for thought on energy (in)security. #Totalforsvaret Link: https://lnkd.in/dQe-CqRT Jyotika Athavale Dr. Clara Neppel John C. Artificial intelligence (AI) stands out as one of the most transformative and powerful tools in a world increasingly dominated by technology. However, a significant drawback is often overlooked—AI’s voracious appetite for energy. As governments and environmental regulatory groups (ERG) remain seemingly passive, this issue threatens to escalate. Why aren’t these bodies taking decisive action? This post delves into the heart of the problem, explores why urgent measures are needed, and offers recommendations for addressing the environmental impact of AI. https://lnkd.in/g8KKrGuY
