WHY WE SHOULD STOP GIVING 100% ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY AWARDS OUT Congratulations, child, on the fortunate circumstances that enable you to have better health and consistency than your classmates. So, we want kids to come to school. Of course. It’s pretty pointless running one if nobody turns up. But like with pen licenses in yesterday’s post, the idea of rewarding and celebrating individuals’ 100% attendance becomes unjust very quickly. 🤮It incentivises kids coming into school if sick. 🤔It is experienced as a punishment for children who cannot attend every day 👵 Primary-age children cannot bring themselves to school - they rely upon their adults to be brought 🏫 Rewarding it class by class is even worse. It essentially rewards the children for not having classmates whose circumstances are disadvantageous (medical, social service, health, homelessness) 🥳 Celebrating those who do attend every day does not change the circumstances that prevent others from doing so 😳 It shames children who might love to be in school more often and more punctually, but who cannot due to medical appointments, family circumstance, housing difficulties and their reliance on public transport. — Why am I sharing these posts about reward and sanction? Am I spending my holidays just hating on schools? No. But the decisions that schools make with good intentions can often have long-term unintended negative consequences, which are sometimes not in keeping with their own stated values. And in fact, they might perpetuate the very issues that they are designed to solve. (Kids coming into school sick out of a desire to not get into trouble might cause more children and staff to get sick, reducing attendance…) In the thick of it, it is hard to stop and reflect. Does your system of reward and sanction do what you want it to do? Is it helping? Is it fair? Is it discriminatory? Are there better ways?

Yet another solid list of reasons why teachers leave, but there's a vicious cycle inherent to some of these: when leadership is even partly responsible for "poor management" and a "toxic school environment", they're less likely to recognize it and their teachers are less likely to tell them about it. These issues often escape the attention of district leaders for several reasons as well (they're distracted, they aren't sure how to address the problem, the school is otherwise "high performing", etc.). While it takes courage to even be open to the idea, sometimes you need an external evaluation partner to help identify and break the cycle. #teacherretention #teacherwellness
