Raising the Alarm: AEDs and Their Crucial Role in Preventing Cardiac Deaths Yesterday, we at The Mandatory Training Group embarked on a critical learning journey, stepping away from our usual training roles to dive into emergency first aid at work training. This experience wasn't just informative; it was a wake-up call about the urgent need for Automated External Defibrillator (AED) awareness in the UK. 🫀What is a Cardiac Arrest? A cardiac arrest is a sudden and dramatic stop in heart function, halting blood flow to essential organs. It's a life-threatening emergency where time is of the essence. The Startling Statistics: - 30,000: This is the staggering number of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occurring annually in the UK. - Less than 10%: Alarmingly, this is how often AEDs are used in these critical situations. Remarkably, 72% of these incidents occur where we feel safest – our homes. This fact alone underscores the importance of being prepared, no matter where we are. The Dire Consequences: - Imagine the population of a small town, nearly 30,000 people, lost every year to cardiac arrests. - The potential to save thousands of lives is real if AEDs are deployed quickly and effectively. Our Call to Action: 1. Educate Yourself: Learn CPR and how to use an AED. These skills are more than just procedures; they are potential life-savers. 2. Advocate and Raise Awareness: We need to address the dire shortage of AEDs, especially in underprivileged and minority communities. 3. Engage with Your Community: Spread this critical information. Participate in or organise CPR and AED training sessions locally. From my personal experience in clinical settings, I've witnessed the profound impact these skills can have during cardiac emergencies. You don’t have to be a healthcare professional to make a monumental difference in someone’s life. 💙 This is more than just a message; it's a mobilisation call. It's time for us to alter these daunting statistics. By learning, advocating, and preparing, we can collectively substantially impact our communities and homes. Let's harness our collective power to shift these alarming trends. Together, we can be the life-saving pulse in our communities. Together, let's be the heartbeat of change! ❤️ CPR and AED training resources and information - https://bit.ly/47L8W2N Enjoyed this post? A Mother's Triumph: A Tale of Quick Thinking and Preparedness In 2019, my world turned upside down when my son was day 10 faced a sudden health crisis at home. Father, Husband, Helicopter Rescue Paramedic. President at TEAAM Aeromedical. Owner, SARMed School. Post Traumatic Stress Survivor. Board member Canadian Association of Wilderness Medicine
One major benefit of using a wilderness air ambulance like ours is the experience, knowledge and bypass guidelines our medical staff have to decide which hospital is most appropriate for the needs of the patient. Although it’s tempting to load and go with the first aid attendants on site, most often, potentially waiting a little longer for our medics to arrive results in significant net savings in time to definitive care. Major traumas, head injuries, acute medical events and other major insults have much better outcomes if transported to a trauma center instead of a smaller hospital or clinic. The ability to be assessed and treated rapidly by emergency physicians and nurses, neurologists, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, respiratory therapists and more make a massive difference in outcomes. Calling a wilderness HEMS unit like TEAAM can save hours and sometimes days. That translates into better outcomes. And better outcomes for the patient is what it’s all about.
