An Overview On My Past 50 Year R&D Activities: After fifty years of hard work, it is the time to set back and look to what I have done. While, most of the achieved research and developments have been recorded in large numbers of journals publications, book chapters, and conferences proceedings, more than 35 granted US patents and patents pending are disclosing novel technologies in various fields. Over fifty R&D projects have been successfully completed. More than half of them were for the US Defense (Navy, Army, and Air forces), as well as NASA Lewis Research Center and NASA Langley Research Center, including joint patents with the US Army and NASA Langley Research Center. Most of the research projects were performed/conducted at the Drexel Fiber Optics and Photonics Manufacturing Engineering Center (FOPMEC). The center was considered as Center of Excellence to the State of Pennsylvania. I was the Cener Founder, and the Director of the center for his 20 years life time. The rest of the R&D projects were conducted at our two companies; Photonics, Inc and Photonics Laboratories, Inc, check (www.photonicslabs.com) Many of the R&D projects were unique as directed to the development of novel technologies in different science and engineering fields, including the new field of Smart Materials and Smart Structures. The attached document presents a summary of samples of what have been done and successfully completed. The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) just launched the Emerging Technology portfolio, along with a solicitation specific to the Transition of Quantum Sensors (TQS). U of T Engineering-led research group including Amr S. Helmy to develop quantum sensors as an alternative to GPS. According to an article at UofT Engineering, the research team — which also includes professors from the University of Alberta, Carleton University, McMaster University, and the University of Waterloo — was awarded funding for four years from Canada’s Department of National Defence (DND) to focus on developing quantum sensors that can more accurately determine geolocation compared to current sensors. The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has funded a project with a $1 million grant to develop a "quantum photonic-dimer laser" that uses quantum entanglement to enhance laser performance. Unlike conventional lasers that rely on the coherent light produced by electron oscillations in atoms, this new technology binds photons together using quantum entanglement. This binding results in a highly concentrated beam capable of maintaining its strength and precision over long distances and through adverse conditions like thick fog. Jung-Tsung Shen, an associate professor at Washington University in St. Louis, leads the project. He explains that entangled photons can protect each other from atmospheric damage, preserving phase information. The photonic dimer laser bonds pairs of photons, making them easier to manipulate and more stable, which could significantly improve military applications such as surveillance and secure communications. The enhanced energy and stability of the laser make it suitable for harsh environments and extended operational ranges. In addition to military uses, the technology shows promise in fields like quantum computing and telecommunications, potentially leading to faster and more secure data transmission. Previous research by Shen's team demonstrated the laser's potential in deep brain imaging by mapping neural structures using photonic dimers. Shen believes this innovative use of entanglement is only the beginning of its possible applications. On APRIL 18-19, 2024, for the #CHIPS R&D National Advanced #Packaging #Manufacturing Program (NAPMP) Summit, co-hosted with the NASA Ames Research Center The Summit will be a place to foster collaboration, coordination, and innovation within the advanced packaging community. [COMST Survey] Terahertz Communications and Sensing for 6G and Beyond: A Comprehensive Review This paper presents a comprehensive treatment and technology survey on THz communications and sensing in terms of advantages, applications, propagation characterization, channel modeling, measurement campaigns, antennas, transceiver devices, beamforming, networking, the integration of communications and sensing, and experimental testbeds. The paper gives a holistic view of the current state of the art and highlights the open research challenges towards 6G and beyond.

🛫 Prof. Dr. Constantin Haefner kicked off the AKL – International Laser Technology Congress ... with an overview of the collaboration between research and industry, focusing on key areas of the ILT (Institute of Laser Technology) such as Cyber Photonics, Quantum Technology, Secondary Sources, Laser Fusion, and Sustainability. During his presentation, Prof. Dr. Constantin Haefner highlighted the integration of AI into engineering processes, expanding the traditional engineering triangle of Cost, Quality, Timeto include Sustainability. He emphasized that while smart products are valuable, the digital connections they enable pose significant management challenges for industries. The digital transformation presents a challenge for the entire industry, with the value shifting towards digital connections rather than solely smart products. Professor Haefner mentioned significant investments, such as the 1.6 billion euros from the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) for advancing research in Germany, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. The conference concluded with a discussion on the future of laser technology, particularly focusing on cyber photonics. The question posed was, "Are you ready for cyber photonics?" Finally, there was an official acknowledgment and gratitude expressed to Professor Loosen, a core figure at ILT who recently retired. Professor Haefner thanked him for his dedication and contributions to ILT. Thank you very much from my side as well.
