The conversation around fossil fuels is a prehistoric one. Do we forage for our energy or do we farm it or do we fabricate it.
On the trip to RE+ JetBlue was having difficulty getting their WiFi working. So instead I turned on my headphones and listened to Sapiens book on tape on Spotify.
What is characterized in the book is how humans came to be so advanced. And one of my main takeaways so far is that when we invest locally, and we control more inputs we can then refine the outputs.
So as we look at the upgrade of energy sources, it begs the question what is the end of the road? We move from a forager to society to a farming society to a fabrication society.
From my perspective we are forced to “upgrade” because our demand exceeds the passive regeneration limits of the area. So we move on. However as land is limited with borders and indigenous people and species, if we don’t want to have conflict, we have to become more productive with what we have to sustain growth.
So as we move away from foraged fossil fuels, we are now farming solar energy. First it was just for heat with solar hot water, and then we became more productive with solar electricity and heat pumps and batteries.
We can further increase the production with multiple layer solar that exceeds 29% efficiency (typical is 22.5% today). However the cost of energy isn’t high enough to justify needing less area yet. And we will continue to farm until there isn’t enough land.
At this point we will move to fabricate energy. Batteries that last a lifetime. Already we have some chemistries work at 30,000 cycles or 92 years of one cycle per day.
So the question is will we ever be able to print these batteries from thin air.
We have the ability to collect humidity with a heat pump (H2O). We can then deionize it, and electrolyze it for hydrogen. We have the ability for direct air capture (CO2), which we can be turned to natural gas through methanization (CO2 + 4H2O -> CH4 + 2H2O2). And this methane can be used to make plastics through cracking into ethylene and propalyne.
So the question is, will your exhaust air heat pump ever be able to feed your 3D printer to make batteries and solar cells with positive NET ENERGY.
Because we see the available energy disappear every step away from solar electricity. (Battery roundtrip efficiency, dehumidification, electrolysis, compression, DAC, methanization, cracking, printing).
The Stone Age gave way to Bronze Age, not because we ran out of stones, but because bronze allowed societies to advance more quickly with less work. We are in the same moment with farmed and fabricated energy vs foraged energy. We are hitting peak demand of oil globally, because as a global community we have not yet made the cumulative jump to a more efficient way.
However because of China, our ability to have solar and batteries at scale, is here. And as every community moves to energy net positive, we can close the loop, and fabricate our energy.

Hydrogen fueling station has gained tremendous focus owing to growing adoption of fuel cell electric vehicles, which came into existence depending on hydrogen power. Focus should be placed on hydrogen fuel as the future fuel to replace the existing gasoline or electric engine vehicles.
How do you refuel a truck with hydrogen gas? Take a look at the short video below. I'm loving helping to demystify hydrogen technology with content like this 🤩
