What's it like to drive a #hydrogen van? Alun Jones, First Call Operative (FCO) for Wales & West Utilities and driver in our latest #FCEV trials says: “First Hydrogen’s van is lovely to drive and allowed us to get on with our job. The fact you can quickly refuel rather than charge up overnight is a massive advantage for us as sometimes we respond to calls from our homes in the middle of the night. I can definitely see the hydrogen vans working at Wales & West Utilities in terms of the efficiency we need.” During the vehicle trials, our FCEV was shared by two drivers from Wales & West Utilities' Network Emergency & Metering Services team who are responsible for emergency metering work for more than 7.5 million customers across Wales and the south west of England. Most of the vehicle’s journeys were travelling to customer call outs, averaging 5-6 visits per day. The Bleeding Edge...   Over the years, I have launched a number of successful cutting edge technology solutions to the mobility industry. One innovation changed parking operations around the world.  More about that in another post.    I have also been on the bleeding edge of technology. In the early 90’s, in a commitment to be environmentally conscious, I thought it would be a good idea to be the first transit system in California to convert gasoline paratransit vans to run on CNG.   With grants from a utility company and the air quality district, we converted 4 vans.  Total failure. After numerous technicians, flown in from around the country by the lead vendor, could not stop the small explosions and flames in the engine compartments, I pulled the plug on the project. The conversion technology promoted at the time just simply wasn’t ready.  Good thing I kept the original gas tanks in storage.   It's fun to lead. But it is never without risks. If you are wise, you learn from your failures. My CNG debacle definitely shaped my approach to experimentation in general, and alternative fuels in particular.     Don’t be afraid to innovate. That said… trust, but verify. And know when to stop and pull the plug.
