Does Pride Month make you uncomfortable? At first this made me smile but then if I look beyond my flippant reaction, this isn’t what I want at all. If Pride Month makes you uncomfortable, what I want is for you to ask yourself why? What business is it of ours who people love and how people identify? Why would we do anything other than embrace and accept it? Progress happens when we question and challenge ourselves, not from insulting those who feel uncomfortable. Let’s seek to understand and embrace difference. Our Pride Alliance have planned a month of events to educate, to celebrate and to engage allies. I can’t wait to listen and learn. As we celebrate Pride Month, I’ve been reflecting on why diversity and inclusion in the workplace remain such important topics and what they mean to me personally.   I believe that one of the strongest biases that we need to overcome is the “like-me” bias, to ensure that we surround ourselves with different perspectives and experiences. Ensuring diversity at the forefront means giving everyone equal opportunity regardless of their gender, background, sexual orientation - which is fair and results in hiring and promoting the very best people. It’s also been proven over and over again (e.g., https://lnkd.in/eECSZDXX) that a diverse team outperforms an homogeneous one, all other things equal. So, promoting diversity means forming a stronger, better performing team…and inclusion? We should start from inclusion. Promoting diversity in a non-inclusive environment is a recipe for higher attrition at best and harassment at worst. That’s why I’m proud that being part of ABB is to be part of an organization committed to supporting LGBTQ+ communities by creating an inclusive environment that brings people together. It’s our duty to foster a sense of belonging so that our colleagues can bring their authentic selves to work every day. As with most emerging companies, challenges are numerous and progress is precious. It’s easy to lose your way. I wrote the song “The Place We All Belong” to express my thanks to our team at Rali for creating a culture where people are valued, appreciated, and connected to our mission and each other. The song is also a wish. A wish that it might help others create a conversation with their team or organization about what makes your place THE PLACE you all belong. 🎭 Embracing Diversity: Reflecting on Purim's Lesson in Authenticity at Work 🎭 Today Sedex took the opportunity to celebrate Purim by making Mishloach Manot (Purim gift bags). Purim (which is this Sunday) is a joyous Jewish holiday marked by costumes, revelry, and the retelling of an ancient story, it's an opportune moment to reflect on its relevance to our modern workplaces. Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people from persecution in ancient Persia. One aspect of this tale often overlooked is the necessity for many Jews, like Queen Esther, to conceal their true identity in order to navigate their professional and personal lives safely. In today's diverse workplaces, many individuals still grapple with the decision to reveal or conceal aspects of their identity, including their cultural or religious background (there were times when starting in my career that I was guilty of this). While Purim's context may be historical, its lessons remain deeply resonant. We must foster environments where authenticity is not just encouraged but celebrated. When individuals feel empowered to bring their whole selves to work, they contribute more fully, innovate more boldly, and collaborate more effectively. It's truly inspiring to see the work Sedex does around diversity. Creating a safe space for people from different religions and backgrounds to come together and share their customs and beliefs with a team who are eager to learn. Let's take this Purim as an opportunity to reflect on how we can create inclusive workplaces where everyone feels valued and accepted for who they truly are. Together, let's strive to make every day a celebration of diversity, authenticity, and unity.
