The Tasracing 2024 annual report is out and tells us that:
- A shocking 10 percent of the retired Thoroughbreds (31 horses) have been “euthanised” by a vet or knackery/abattoir person.
- These 31 Thoroughbreds have been killed due to injuries, illness, or because they were “unsafe to rehome, unable to rehome.”
- Another 37 “retired” Thoroughbreds are now being used for breeding purposes in the racing industry.
- 3% died because of “accidental” or natural causes.
As for the Standardbred horses used in Harness Racing, it’s even worse.
11.8% were euthanised by a vet or knackery/abattoir person. And a remarkable 15.9% (23 horses) died because of accidental or natural causes.
Interestingly, this past year Tasracing received more than $36M in public funds, yet it still made a loss of $1.2M last financial year.
