Excavator teeth see a lot of damage and need to be built back up after time. To do this you need to use a layering technique like Bob Higg demonstrates here, starting with 7018 to build back the tooth's shape, then add a layer of 309 stainless to act as a bridge before adding your hard-facing rod. After you have added all your layers to get everything uniform again use a 3M Cubitron 3 Fibre Disc to eat away material quickly. While you are grinding you can tell which material you are hitting by looking at the sparks, when you are on your hard-facing material the sparks will disappear due to the lack of carbon.
